Yeah I would do this too. I would say:

"Look mate, just because you spend more money on your peice of sh1t bose system doesnt make it better than mine, you want benchmarked sound comparison's to prove it? No? Then accept I researched mine, and it is better than yours."

Then explain:

"Thats not the point anyway, the point is, I happen to have decent stuff, some of it being better than yours, so would you shut the fvck up telling me how your always better than me, it pisses me right off and im sick of hearing it".

Then continue:

"I dont want to sound harsh but how do you think you would HONESTLY feel if I constantly told you everything I had was better than yours?"

See what he replys and sort your differences out. Make him feel like sh1t for causing you so much hassle, get an apology from him.
If he insist's hes in the right, explain what other people think of him. You dont need people putting you down in life, believe me, explain that to him, then explain you had the decency to stay friends with him.

Thats what I would do.

same thing with my roommate, he is always trying to get better things than me, until i finally decided to take different interests from him. He tries to get me into new hobbies with him, but i just refuse because i know he'll just get something better than me, just cause he so damn used to having the best of the best. Note: he claims he doesn't have money, nor does his family, but manages to get money magically.

It got to a point where i simply avoided him all summer and such. I don't think i'd want to stop being friends with him, considering how we've known each other since sophomore year in high school, we're 3rd year college now. Anyways, simple answer, just ignore it, and if it doesn't work ignore him. He will soon or LATER realize that he's being stupid and change. If not, you'll get to a certain point in that ignoring period where you just don't give a damn anymore. goog luck.
