Both (Solaris and AIX I think...) of the recent Unixes can run X. My Solaris 8 install came with CDE. Solaris 9 I think comes with Gnome. I got a Gnome disk with the solaris install, but I havent tried it out yet. I dont know enough about AIX.... HP-UX, Tru64, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD all come with X I believe, if you wanted to go with one of those. I dont have much experience with most of the commercial Unix-like systems.

A ten minute process on a modern machine.

/searches everywhere to get his damn drivers

Bought bad hardware or what? Most of the hardware I purchase has Linux support in the kernel..

/rebuilds again

Up to 20 minutes now...

/reinstalls because of power outage mid-build

Your fault for not using an UPS. Not Linux's fault anyhow.

/recompiles

25 minutes...

/searches
/rebuilds

35 minutes.

Gee, no work at all.

For me, its:

Install, we'll say, Debian.
reboot
add tulip to /etc/modules and modprobe the tulip driver
install necessary software to get a usable system

/installs XP Pro w/SP1
/goes to WU & nvidia.com
/plays games & mp3s & surfs ATOT

For me with 2k it was:
Install 2k + all patches and sp2
Install ethernet drivers if necessary (no drivers for linksys cards?!)
download necessary software for a workable system

But thats me, Im not getting into which is easier because some people think well, and others use Windows ;)

It's not that tough to get a usable Linux system. It is however easier for 99% of people to get a usable Windows system. especially XP/2K.

in Russia..;)

linux runs you...
sorry, couldn't resist :)

now seriously -- spend some time securing your machine.
I am not sure what SuSE defaults are, but usally the linux distros come
with many daemons running by default; you may need to kill them

Oh, and you can also set whatever level of graphical goodness you want. Right from a blank screen that you right click on to bring up a command line, to something like this.

OK, I'm impressed. What are you running? Redhat?

Actually that screenie was taken on my Mandrake 7.0 setup I had a while back. I don't have it anymore.

Nik, I told you what driver to use for the audigy :p
Also, try out Galeon, it's based on the Gecko(mozilla) engine and it's the best freaking browser ever.

I can't crash my XP install... I can't crash my linux install.

I've been running linux inside of XP via VMWare + 3dmax occasionally... it's a bit slow with 512 MB ram, but stable.

Descartes, let's put it this way. I have crashed XP professional by running windows media player once on a box I built myself. I have yet to crash linux or free bsd. I have brought XP to it's knees many times. How can you make such a bold statement as to say that since I cannot keep my windows box from crashing that I shouldn't be able to keep a linux box running, that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It isn't my fault Microsoft cannot code as well. 2000/XP is a whole lot better than all the previous versions, I will give it that, but that doesn't mean that it's crash proof, nor does it mean that it runs as well as a linux box.
