unless you play games, there is no need for windows. I recently got a hold of mandrake and could not believe how easy it was to install. The partitioning part was a little screwy, but after that I barely touched a thing and the OS worked like a charm. Downloaded open office and I was set. I do keep my primary PC as windows for the time being cause I play games and I am still working on getting the CDR software down pat. With the way microsoft is going with their licensing policies I am liking linux a little more every day.

Screw windows.

Now, in order to become a true hardcore Linux zealot, you must give up showers, shaving, deodorant, and your girlfriend. :D You must also use the word "sux0rz" in daily conversation - such as "OMG WINDOWS SUX0RZ!!!!1" And your first and only solution to any computer problem should be: "Install Linux."

Anyone else miss the Linux Zealot cartoons over at annoyances? :)

That sounds pretty decent. Will my colleagues be able to read my "open office" spreadsheets and document files with thier windows office machines?

Well, SuSE 8.1 has full support for DirectX8 now. I should be able to play some games.

Anyway, I need drivers for my Audigy2. What's the best place for 3rd party drivers or whatever?

You running Mozilla ?

WTF? Mozilla is the best browser there is, and Mandrake 9.0 takes 20 minutes to fully install and get online.

Mozilla can't even render the AT forums 100% correctly. If you try shrinking the browser window, you can make the vertical table lines disappear, which is just stupid enough to make me not use it.

Does anybody know how to correctly remove it, and restore the original XP boot loader? It's installed in a separate HD, that has to be removed from the system, and I'm not certain if LILO was installed in the master (XP) or the slave (Linux) HDs.

how the hell did ya get the anantech background like that (navy) ???

I wonder what those who suddenly switch only to Linux actually do with their boxen. I have a win2k box, an xp box, a win2k laptop, and a debian laptop; all of these are tools that I couldn't simply wipe clean and move to a new platform. Indeed, my world would turn upside down if I had to reconfigure my boxen.

So, seriously; do those of you who simply decide to switch only to Linux actually use your machine for something other than gaim/atot/mp3s?

Nik, I told you what driver to use for the audigy :p
Also, try out Galeon, it's based on the Gecko(mozilla) engine and it's the best freaking browser ever.

I have a number of linux machines here at work and also at home.

I have an old Dual PPro 200 with Redhat 7.2 running:

apache
proftpd
mysql
php

It is basically a web/forum and FTP server. Works great and is easily one of the most stable machines I have ever been around.

Please post proof rather than apocryphal claims like "Xp is NOT just as stable".

If you can't keep your Win2k/XP box stable, how the hell do you run linux?

My Linux is fine. My WinXP is fine. Neither of them crash.

I dont run Linux right now, but Ill take a crack at this one:
4x OpenBSD (2x 3.2, 2x 3.1 all stable except one machine not connected to the network)
1x Solaris 8
1x Mac OS X 10.1.5

OpenBSD 3.2-stable x86: Firewall
OpenBSD 3.2-stable SPARC4m: shell server/test box
OpenBSD 3.1-stable x86: webserver
OpenBSD 3.1-release x86: was a desktop, will set it up on the network when I find a compatible wireless card
Solaris 8 sparc64: will be running mysql and be used for education when I get around to it.
Mac OS X PPC: Desktop system (ATOT, fire, and mp3s)
I also run snort on one of the machines for research. I have hacked a *VERY SMALL* amount of src for various programs on the machines for fun, I have Unix resources available to myself and friends, and all in all, I learn a lot.

Nothing exciting, but more than just mp3s and ATOT ;)

Does Unix have a GUI? If I fork out the money for a real Unix install, does it come with much of anything? Or do you have to do it all yourself?
