I pulled my groin at work lifting some furniture and after a week of it still hurting, I decided to feel around. I noticed a large lump above my "man sh1t" and described it to my boss, who later told me, "welcome to the world of hernias".

This really sucks and it's starting to cause pain in some of my daily working habits. I'm going to file an accident report at work, but I'm not sure if it's going to do anything for me. Without insurance for the time being, I think i'm out of luck.

From Wikipedia
A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue out of the body cavity in which it normally lies. By far the most common hernias develop in the abdomen, when a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a localized hole, or "defect", through which the protrusion occurs. These may present either with pain at the site, a visible or palpable lump, or in some cases by more vague symptoms resulting from pressure on an intraabdominal organ which has become "stuck" in the hernia. Fatty tissue usually enters a hernia first, but it may be followed by or accompanied by a segment of intestine or other intraabdominal organ. It is generally advisable to repair hernias in a timely fashion, in order to prevent complications which include intestinal blockage, gangrene, and death. Most hernias can be surgically repaired. Recovery rarely requires long-term changes in lifestyle.

I had a double hernia as a baby. Fortunately, I don't remember a damn thing about it.

Eeesh.

Ahh, I see. Interesting.. So why does lifting things do that?

It causes you to tighten you're muscles like you're trying to sh!t...Or is it like you're trying to keep from sh!tting? Anyway..

Does the intense muscle contraction from lifting somthing very heavy push internal things outwards or something?

Bingo. The organs are pushed against the abdominal wall and sometimes they find a weak spot and end up poking through.

Lovely.....

So what can you do to strengthen your abdominal wall? :D Is it just some sort've realitivly thin membrane, or is it muscle that could be strengthened and thickened?

LOL, some people, myself included have a kind of a gap or weak spot in the abdominal wall, and most people who do, will get a heria and have to get it fixed. No amout of exercizs will fix it. Some guy blew one out during a weightlifting thing on TV a long time ago. You should have seen the look on his face..

I was "helping" the old guy who lived next door in his yard and I blew mine by pushing a lawn mower. A few weeks later, I was getting operated on. I was just about to turn five.

It was horrible back then, compared to now. A guy I worked with walked around with a bulge on his left side for over a year before getting it fixed. It was HUGE!! Like CD sized!

Some people have it really bad. My Dad's cousin, had NINE operations all together (4 on one side, 5 on the other!) before they finally put in the then new "mesh" to fix it for good when he was in his late 60's. It was kind of a joke, my dad would come home and ask what happened at work, "Well, Sam ruptured himself again!" We couldn't help but laugh! Even Sam himself thought it was funny, in a really sick sort of way. It didn't hurt him any, he lived to be 96, and was in decent shape until about a year before he died

So it doesn't matter how strong your core is - you can still get hernia?

I had insurance, but I was "reassigned" a new position at work, and I lost my full time benefits.
