My first build...

... so I figured, why not go all the way?

I picked up an Athlon XP 1800 and I'm running it on an MSI 6830 motherboard with a Thermoengine heatsink/fan in a generic full tower case. The resulting temperature is 145 degrees F on the CPU pretty consistently, 120-ish in the case.

So, as this *is* my first effort, I'm going to be paranoid.

1) From the diagnostics, the temperature is a little high (they're set by default to go off at 140). Is this something to be worried about?

2) The simplest way to bring the temperature down would be to...? Mount a fan drawing air into the case, or one pushing it out? Yes, I know turning the computer off will do it. ;)

Get an Alpha PAL8045 if you're "gonna go all the way" ;) While you're at it, post in Celsius. I cannot relate computer temps if you use fahrenheit. 40+*C is a little too much for idle temps on an AMD that's not OC'd. You could increase the airflow going in and out of your case to lower ambient case temps.

Thanks for the suggestion, Flowerman, I'll look into it this afternoon.

As for degrees C - 45-47 idle, so by your standards it's a bit too high. So I think I'll put a couple of smaller fans in to improve the air flow going in and out.

I would put at LEAST one fan sucking in and one blowing out....no less.....

Unless you're overclocking, I wouldn't worry about temperatures too much, unless they're obscenely high - i.e. 55C idle. With an Antec SX1040B with two fans as intake, two exhaust with the power supply, I'm running at ~40-45C idle, 49C load. When the A/C is on, I've run as low as 34C - and I'm running retail HSF. With your most likely better HSF you can expect ~40 or so at average room temperature. But the intake and exhaust fans are a must...

45-47 idle is acceptable if you dont OC. Post your load temps so we can judge those too. I am among the many others over at the hardforums where we insist on having everything as cool as reasonably possible :D For me, 45-47 would be wayy tooo much :)

45-47 is fine for non-OC like you said.. in fact that I'd only get freaked at 50C because originally 46 was my target when I was building the quietest air cooling setup possible for my 1.33.. I ended up with 41 Idle though.. :)

About posting degrees, the shortcut for the degree symbol is alt+0176.

As for case fans, I only have an intake fan in addition to the power supply. My case also has another fan hole in it, and some vents on the back and front.
