dammit shimm, i've been thinking about going back to intel for the last few weeks since the performance with the new chipsets are so great....and reading about your switch is making it so much more tempting. ;) i was fairly satisfied with my tbred @ 2.5ghz....

remember the price for performance factor. in most cases AMD still comes out on top. if you need the fastest in the land you will end up always chaseing rainbows

Jen

yeah, i guess that's true. but the idea of 3.5ghz is nice. :D i suppose i can hold off for awhile since i don't want to spend ~$300 for a new mobo/cpu just yet.

I would hold off. To be honest, I don't notice a difference between my P4C@3.4 GHz or my Barton@2600 mhz.

but most people won't hit 2.6 ghz with a barton and won't want to risk using 2.1+ volts

and considering that the 2.4C's are hitting upwards to 3.5 to 3.6 with 1.65 volts or lower...

you get the idea...

but yes.. cost/performance wise.. amd is still the way to go!

I'd save the extra bux and go for an upgraded vid card - that's more important than the processor nowadays IMO, especially with the stratospheric prices of these video cards, omg.

What are your temps Shim? My P4C is toasty at 1.6 volts, 3.4 GHz, and 68 degrees C under load with the retail heatsink/fan, heheh.

mines under water... not literally but you know what i mean!!!

:)

it's about 53-55C's under load @ 1.65 volts (1.6 actual) running at 3.5 ghz

what waterblock? i have a tc-4, and am pretty tempted by this, but i would need better ram than my xms3200.

well it depends on high you get your chip at ...

if you get lucky like me and get it up to 12 x 292, yes, you will need better ram... 292 * 4/5 = ~234 mhz on the fsb

the average though for the 2.4C is 3.3 to 3.4

i am using a swiftech mcw-5000A converted to a 5000P

He could always use the 3:2 ratio instead of the 5:4 ratio, that would put his ram at 194mhz.

I have had bad luck with my CPUs, two 2.4cs, one at 3.1ghz, the other at 3.2ghz. The third is a 2.6c and does 3.38ghz @ 1.65v actual :\
OK, maybe not bad luck, some people can't even get to 3ghz, hehe. My goal was always 3.3 on a 2.4c, and I was hoping for 3.4ghz on a 2.6c :(

nvidia vid cards seem to allow higher P4 overclocks then ATI.

strange but true ~ nice work Shimm !

I see your journey to the darkside is now complete Darth Shimmishim  As Yoda said, the Darkside is faster and easier ;)

That's a sweet overclock you have going but I'm still waiting for prescott, or at least I'm trying to convince myself too :p

thanks!

prescott schmescott...

next upgrade will be after ddr2 is released for me :)

and depending on how my money saving goes, i'll got a prommie :)

woo hoo!

4+ ghz p4.. how fun would that be???

lol... but could you imagine running a 4 ghz processor (12 x 333.33) with a 5:4 divider (makes ram 266) with some sweet pc4200 ram? lol...

that just sounds nuts....

but hear some of these p4's are sensitive to low temps...

Try DDR2 667
link and Intel isn't expecting to release a supporting chipset till Q2 '04, at least for the desktop market. Server makers will be shooting for ealier if possible though mass production of DDR2 ram may hold the party up from what I've read. If I'm supposed to belive you 2 plan to stick with the current platform till then my answer is wanna bet? ;) Damn Typos!

Hey Shimmishim how about some memtest86 #s(L1, L2 cache GB/s and Ram MB/s) at your P4's and 1700's highest FSB. Would make for a lively thread. ;)
