every time i open firefox, within 60 seconds i have one or two pop-unders that open up. the windows are called "Aurora," and deleting the application responsible for the process does nothing. occasionally, ill get popup opening in an IE window. this only happens when firefox is open, not if i use IE, and it stops immediately if i close firefox (and the already open ads). if i dont open firefox, i dont get any of them. AVG, spybot, and adaware dont pick anything up, theyre all up-to-date. reinstalling firefox didnt work. HELP!

Huh  Try Webroot Spysweeper 30-day trial and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, plus also try the command-line scanner I've made instructions for here (text file). I was reading a malware description at NAI today that sort of fit the general scheme... Ezula.

Post back the results? :)

<conspiracy> Microsoft is writing viruses to force you to use their web browser </conspiracy>

Be a rebel ;)

It's free ;)

-------------------

now for the helpful part of my post.

Apparently it's a program installed through several websites (funnyjunk, etc). Through my various searches on google, one way to get rid of it is to use the Aurora uninstall program. Unfortunately for you, it only works (from what I've read) if you agree to install another program, from the same company that makes Aurora, that does the same thing. Some people report being fine after using it, others say it installed more crap on their system. Use at your own risk

Alternately, you can use the simple method.

Eliminate the Aurora pop-up spyware:
Go to start/run and type CMD press ok
When it opens type CD and press return and then when you see the C: prompt type CD/WINDOWS press return
Type NAIL.EXE /FullRemove press return

Though reading further on through the various topics, it only seems temporary. :|

From what I've also read, WebRoot spysweeper only fixes the problem temporarily.

There's a guy over at the HijackThis site that posted a file for removing it.

well, unfortunately, none of the suggested fixes have solved the problem. however, im trying opera again for the first time in a few years, and im really liking it. its noticeably faster than firefox, surprisingly enough.

edit: the simple command line removal of nail.exe seems to be working for now. :) still liking opera, though.

AdBlock

I like the C++ version myself.

Install isn't quite as smooth as a FireFox extension yet, but it does work. :)

pm if you have problems.

I had that aurora spyware on a customer's computer, and everything i tried wouldn't get rid of that nail.exe file. I did the command line thing, the uninstall utility, every spyware tool and had to finally format.

Aurora is a nasty spyware. :(

I am going to state the obvious solution so dont get annoyed if youve already done this

In Firefox go to Tools>Options On the general tab click the Check Now button to see if Firefox is your default browser. If it isnt make it your default browser so that IE ( and consequently adware/spyware looking for that IE browser signature ) cant open consoles pop-unders or Pop Ups. Then go to the Web Features tab and ensure that Block Popup Windows is checked.
Then go to the advanced tab and under the Software Update node check both Firefox and My Extensions and Themes checkboxes. then click the Check Now button to ensure that you have the latest version of Firefox

Happy computing:)

Anyone get this Aurora program removed yet? Haven't found any luck through Google, whenever the browser is reopened, all of Aurora comes right back into the system...

Here's the company to thank for this:
