My Facebook Account was hacked...how do I get it back?

So I don't use Facebook much and have it linked to an old Email account that's not on my primary radar. It looks like it was hacked 6 days ago and I'm not sure how to get it back. They changed the email address and password on the account and there aren't any options for me to change the password even though Facebook knows the old password.

Anyone got any ideas of how to get them to either close the account or give me the keys again? The password was pretty complex, so I'm not sure how they got it to begin with.

Consider it a blessing.

Does Facebook have any sort of password reset questions? Did you put legitimate answers in there, something that someone you know might know the answer to?

they have 2 factor authentication.

not sure if OP can use it to give him access.

He can email facebook support to recover his account but will need to supply info proving who he is. Previous emails send by facebook should count. Knowing the previous password should count.

Good luck.

Early on I had an account once, under an alias. Must have pissed someone off (Imagine that 🙄) and they reported me as not using my "actual name"... well duh, and fuck no. My name is unique enough to the point if you google my name there are only a handful in the country.

They demanded that I submit a copy of my driver's license as proof of identity... when pigs fly...

I also have a real issue with business and companies that limit interaction to their goods or wares only via FB. Fuck them also... I will not compromise my security or privacy for someone else's convenience, by having an account.

And I never want to hear some idiot talking about "staying in touch with friends or family" bullshit. WTF did you do before FB? Along the same lines as a high school reunion. Why attend and pretend to be nice to the jackwagons and assholes you went to high school with? For the actual friends from that era, we remained in touch from everything from snail mail to old fashion phones calls, and still do for the few that are still alive. (class of '65)

Docs I read stated that they don't have a public support number and that any of them posted are setup by scammers....just fyi. That appears to be a number that goes to a recording. What's bad is that they have no recourse if you don't have access to your account. I submitted a form to Facebook using another avenue, but haven't gotten a response.

I have no resolution on this yet. I assume it will take a while to get a response from FB. I hate the feeling of having no control or recourse. It may be time for me to clean out that account after I get control and shut down FB....go back to MySpace or geocities instead.

Hopefully they aren't as bad as Twitter's "customer service" was.

They locked my account on December 28, 2020 due to a log in attempt from India, and I never received a response/any action from them until May 25, 2021......a few days short of 5 months.

This seems to happen a lot, it comes in waves. One of my FB friends had it happen right in front of her eyes as she was using the account. Some douchebag was changing her profile pic. FB needs to fix their shit. Basically if you accept a friend request from one of these hackers they can take over your account, not really sure how it works. I suggested she change her password but not sure how good that does if that person is still friended. FB has been hacked several times in the past few years too so if your password has not been changed since then it might actually be a simple thing of someone using your leaked password. If they changed it and also changed the email then you're pretty much SOL. Happened to my brother in law, got taken over by ISIS. It was actually kind of funny since you browse the pics and it's all this terrorism stuff and militant stuff etc, and then there's this random picture of my nephew playing hockey lol.

Wow. Hopefully I get some kind of response before then. I appreciate the replies because the more I read, the more I realize they likely have had some actual password leaks or some major security flaw. I received 3 emails from them about the changes, but they were unread in an account and I would have been notified had it been accessed. They have some back-line connection here to get into FB at will.... possibly through their secondary auth networks. It's crazy that exploits are a thing these days still.

No joke they need to fix it. Considering how much data they have to sell, they should be protecting it. I suppose they peaked years ago and are spiraling down at this point.

They could not care less since they're still making tons of money selling user data.

I admit I have an account and go on there but it does make me sick to do it, if my family and friends were not on there I would stop using it. The concept behind FB is not bad, it's just too bad the way it's run is so shady.

I really liked Facebook for the first few years. It was a way to catch up with old friends from school days and from the military. We'd share old pictures and post dumb, funny stuff for a laugh.

However, it soon evolved into pretty much nonstop political arguing, and there was no way to stay out of it unless I changed the settings to stop seeing posts by people, and then there really wasn't any point to having them as a friend on there.

Pictures of what people are currently eating, ambiguous "I really didn't need THAT to happen today" style posts, and sharing political pictures/memes; 99% of what Facebook now is.

Do you know how your account was hijacked? Did someone steal the password or gain access some other way?

I saw a few days ago one of my FB friends had their account hacked as well. Not someone I would expect who was lazy with their PW. It seems like these accounts are getting hacked some other way. I just logged into mine and changed the password, logged out of all other sessions, made sure 2 factor authentication was on, and printed out one-time recovery codes.

Early am last Sunday, I got an email on my associated hotmail account (old account) saying someone was trying to login from a new location. I got a second email with a 2FA code. I think I removed my mobile number from FB because I didn't want them to have it. I got a 3rd email a while later stating my password had changed a few hours later.

I think it's as simple as a flaw in their 2FA that allows someone to identify an account email address and then crack the number code through API calls.

Facebook security is really bad, apparently.

Before FB? I just didn't communicate with them at all. Sucks that you went to high school with a bunch of assholes, I didn't. It's also pretty easy to limit how much of your data they have, by not giving them data you don't want them to have ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've never given them my driver's license or phone number.

FB demanded an image of my driver's license.... That goes way the fuck beyond information I wished to share with them.

I saw a page where they would settle for other govt documents or even copies of bills. I'll focus on that maybe next week....but can't do that until I get home. I'm on vacation this week (of course). Not cool because those hacker assholes have definitely been sending message to someone. I have 31 unread messages on my account now (that I can see as notifications without being able to login). Could be worse, but they're definitely spamming people as me.

Do big companies like FB even have customer service for regular people? Pretty sure all that stuff is automated. You would probably need to be a high profile user like a celebrity to actually get to talk to someone.
