My English Comp teacher went nuts today

I'm worried about her.

She went on a crazy rant about John Kerry. Now, I don't care what anyone thinks about John Kerry. Leave that for the P&N forum.

Anyway, she was talking about how Bush was evil and stupid. She had no real body to it, it was just flamebait.

I go to school in Mississippi. Rural Mississippi. Most people there are conservative. In one day she managed to alienate the class. She berated one student for asking about John Kerry having a selfinflicted wound. "Those are all dirty lies!". "John Kerry and Edwards will save this country." "We need nationwide free medical coverage"

So today I learned that my English teacher sucks at making arguments, has no problems alienating the class, and would probably fail anyone who suggested anything she doesn't like. She said not to fall for the "McCarthy like trials of Kerry by the media" and said we should get our news from the internet.

I thought about half of the class was going to walk out.

I hate politics, so I didn't comment. If it's going to be like this, I may just drop the class. That's what everyone was talking about as we walked from the building. My beef isn't with her beliefs, it's with her inability to form a decent argument, and her disdain for anyone who dares to question her.

Has anyone ever had a teacher like this?

I know what you mean. In high school, my AP Macroeconomics teacher was really conservative, and my AP Government teacher was really, really, liberal. It was crazy watching them go at each other sometimes.

is this high school or college?

if college, i would definitely be surprised if she couldn't form a coherent argument and it would be a shame since she is in such an influential position as a professor.

if high school, i wouldn't be that surprised and have known many teachers like her.

I had an English comp prof that was a feminist. The subject manner of the entire class was feminist thought, and authors. None of that was made aware to me before the class. I took the class with two female friends and they both got A's on everything. I KNOW i was a better writer than them (I had read a few of their papers) and no matter how good my paper was, i never got higher than a B.

I hated her.

This is college.

Wednesday she said that the Iranian hostage crisis was 173 days long. I wanted to raise my hand and ask "Times what?", but I didn't.

My goal in there is to keep as low of a profile as humanly possible. That's why I sit in the back. The next time she does this, it's Chemistry or Calc homework time.

sounds like a typical English teacher. My first Writing Comp teacher in college was exactly like this, except a man. He was my teacher during the 2000 election.... my god he had some lame arguments. I never talked in the class because the one time I voiced my opinion he and the class started berating how I could even think of voting for a republican. To say the least I was stuck in the class and never said a word the rest of the quarter.

Heh, well, she asked if anyone agreed with her.

No one raised their hand. ;)

I'd say keep the class. It's only going to get more and more interesting as the election nears. Plus if Bush wins, you may even see her head explode.

Whoa.

Don't get me wrong, she's nice enough, but she just can't hear other viewpoints. Maybe she doesn't think we mere freshmen can make a good argument.

Maybe I'll need to school her on the last day...

ask her to clarify which religion is correct, since they all seem to offer differing opinions.

I agree.

I happen to be a bit conservative, but if she had gone nuts about how much she hated John Kerry, I'd have felt the same way.

She did a good bit of slamming the Vietnam war and Gulf War I and II.

You're a little off ... the liberals do hate Bush with an extreme passion. Most conservatives never hated Bill Clinton. They disagreed with his policies and actions.

Now Hillary ..... maybe that's why conservatives couldn't totally hate Bill .. we have a little sympathy considering his wife.

BTW, a classroom is no place for that. She's there to teach, not to rant.

Most teachers hate Bush because of vouchers. The majority of people (especially those in lower income areas) support vouchers, but they make teachers accountable for actually teaching something. We wouldn't want that to happen, would we? Kids might actually learn something.

Opinions are like @ssholes, right? Just because someone is a professor somewhere doesn't mean they're necessarily street-smart. The majority of people I see in higher-ed are usually wackos....I know this because I work for a university. Smart people get jobs in industry because they pay more....with the exception of the smaller group of professors that are actually good at what they do.

Yep.

We had a reading assignment about a piece written by Rousseau, and we had to write a paper. Guess how much time we spent actually covering Rousseau?

Zip.

Report it to her superior. You're paying her salary so you can learn about the subject - not about her political thoughts.

I thought teachers had free reign over what they could do?

Anyway, I'm sure it's already been reported. I found it disappointing, some guys in there were seriously filled with anger.

No way! Even a tenured teacher would get in trouble for doing crap like that.

Pearl River. It's in the SW part of the state.

I used to go to Ole Miss, and I'll probably transfer to State after my sophomore year.
