A few months ago, during the summer, my dad's credit card was jacked...somehow they obtained ALL his info, ss#, name, associates, mother's name...EVERYTHING. and i mean EVERYTHING. The funny thing is, that week in the summer, we were on vacation in Las Vegas. The day we got back, we recieved a letter from mastercard due to suspicion of fraud...My dad checked and in RENO, somebody charged 3 nights of hotel at circus circus using my dad's credit card....this worried him, because he never lost any credit cards before... He checked other cards he had...including Visa, Discoever...etc...and they ALL and i mean ALL had been used fraudulently...all in Reno..They also used another card to pump some gas at a texaco station in reno...even worse, it was strange because, on a different card, someone used the card to pump gas in SAN JOSE, the city where i live. So it gives us the idea its more than one person. He had a SHELL card that was used to buy 3 admissions for a buffet at circus circus. They recorded the time as only being an hour earlier than when he called...Things only got worse...on his other card, somebody allegedly used all his information to request an emergency card...just by knowing all his information (WTF!!!). The package was, of course, mailed to MY address, here in SAN JOSE, CA.

Apparently, the card was delivered top priority mail using UPS...SOMEONE signed it and recieved the card....the card they recieved was used to cash advance (or somethin like that) of $5,000. That was the MOST bizzare thing...because SOMEONE signed it...and no one was home... which means, spomeone was actually at my home at the time (not necesarrily inside) and signed the UPS package...that thought really freaked us all out...anyway....then came a long painful process of cancelling and closing a whole bunch of credit cards for my dad...we were so upset.

About a month later, when my dad started his work again at Cisco Systems, he receieved a phone call one day from a strange man. he told him to go to a chinese resturaunt...quite near my home too. My dad agreed to it, and when he entered the restuaraunt, there was an ordinary man that greeted him IMMEDIATLY. The man told my dad he was apart of the fraud connection crap (whatever). He said they were a whole big organization and my dad's credit information was not the only one stolen. He told my dad he rexognized him right when he entered the resturaunt cuz he saw his picture be4...(freaky). He told my dad he has ALL the information about him...and he said he would help my dad out of trouble and future fraud and delete him from the database if he would be willing to pay him $800-he said he would want that much $$ for himself, because that would be more $$ then he could get from my dad working with the fraud group. What could my dad do? He agreed to it, and they sat down for some dim sum. He told my dad he was only helping him cuz he was chinese like us, (he was actually cantonese, while we were mandarin-my dad could tell). They shook hands and left off.

My mom was FURIOUS (she always had a bit temper problem) when my dad came home n told her about it...she couldnt believe how "stupid" he was. I would have done the same...i mean...what could u do..? Call the cops? Ha, they would laugh you right off... Anyway, a few days later, they met again due to a phone call at another resturaunt. This time, he told my dad to drive him to the bank, he showed my dad papers that showed ALL of my dad's info, EVERYTHING you could know (real freaky). My dad gave him $800 and he told my dad he did the right thing. Strange thing was, he told my dad to just drive off...we dont know where he went after that...Few WEEKS later, he called my home. My mom picked up, and her temper got to her...She screamed at the guy and cursed him...he hung up on her and we never heard from him again.

Well, my dad went to the police station...called the fraud protection agencies...tried EVERYTHING. And nobody would listen. We were so mad at the police. They barely even cared! just shot us off with a lil pamphlet....GRRR....it still makes me mad...if no one gets hurt, they dont care. Anyway, that was a long story, but trust me, to me and my family, it was a lot longer and harder....i just dont know why people would do something like this...what would their kids think...everything was so tough on us...and some credit card companies are still pending on whether or not to give my dad back his credit... They suspect one of US, me or my brother of stealing it. Im only 13, and my brother is 23. But my brother?! FOr one, we KNOW POSITIVELY he would not even CONSIDER something like this, hes a good kid, trust me. ANd he wouldnt know where to find all that, he doesnt even know my grandma's first and mainden name. I dont even think my mom would know..It was a horrible experience. i tried to summarize it but its still really long....sorry if i left anything out...i juyst wanted to share..Im so sad for my dad, hes been through a lot of rought times lately...hes a really responsible man, i mean, u can call him a safeplayer... doesnt do any risky stuff with anything, especially his money. And throughtout the whole event, he tried to keep everything to himself and handle everything himself because he didnt want to worry us

Please use paragraphs I find it really hard to read those blocks of text. At least attempt paragraphs.

EDIT: Thanks I'll read it now.

My dear god.

My heart goes out to your family. I hope everything is okay. Please let there some sort of punishment exacted upon these people. How low have we fallen when people can unapologetically destroy anothers life?

That sucks man.

Alright, I have retinal BURNOUT now, but here is the gist.
Credit info stolen.
Some guy invites his dad for dim sum, and claims that for 800 he can fix their problems. Dad complies. Dad sees info at a bank, blah blah blah.
Mom, however gets pissed. Some guy calls back, mom bitches, and he hangs up and isnt heard from again. They call police, but they can't do crap, and they might not get their credit back.

That's too bad. Sounds like an inside job at one of the credit reporting agencies. Those are the only people who have everything, AFAIK, but I'm no expert. I'm sorry to hear that. Few cards and low limits are good thing, IMHO. I only have one credit card, a Visa from a credit union.

yea, thats what we learned, we should only keep 1 or 2 credit cards... that way in case these things do happen, headaches dont get too large.. sometimes they just force you to get these new cards though. anyway, sorry if its a lil too long, everything seems to be okay now. thank god.

he had no guarantees, but at the time, what could he do, i mean...it was worth a shot...if $800 could fix everything, that would be good, if not, thats bad....nothing seemed to have happened after that, maybe they didnt have anything else left to do and the guy was just looking for some $$ for himself? Maybe. But we're just glad everythings okay now. Just thought id share. thnx for reading it though

As appealing it might be at times, never give in to blackmail. The blackmailers won't stop after they've milked you once, they'll keep comming back, and there is never a last time. It's best to bite the bullet and immediately report it (in the bank would have been a great time, the cops could have nailed that blackmailer).

it's not of much help for your current situation, but it's something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the advice, ill keep that in mind

MrCodeDude: they wouldnt tell him, the only thing he told him was that it consisted of a whole chain of people (prolly a criminal group). Whats that type of crime called? White collared crime or sumthin. Hard to get cops after em, after all, pretty impossible to prove anything...hardly anyone believes us... i suggest it could be one of those people who work at the casino, who handle the credit card stuff...internal id say...cant be sure though, how would they be able to get all that other info?!

could be them, cuz i heard that the casinos are a lot looser when handling confidential information, especially when it comes to credit cards, compared to other places. I assume its because lots of people use credit cards to carry out a lot of $$ in casinos, so its prolly more loose. Only a thought though.

man that sucks. i wonder what CAN u do in a situation like that? is there any possible way you can get your social security # changed? i mean basicallly your dad's life of having any credit card again is ruined! :(

oh and for that guy..i'd never pay him 800. i would report it to the police and maybe they could possibly catch him or something. but really, the guy is a cheat/thief/liar for a living, what makes u think u can trust him?
