He told my dad he has ALL the information about him...and he said he would help my dad out of trouble and future fraud and delete him from the database if he would be willing to pay him $800-he said he would want that much $$ for himself, because that would be more $$ then he could get from my dad working with the fraud group

yes i'm surprised your dad went for it. i probably woulda went with friends and rope/tape and drag his bound body to the cops.

I dunno tough situation... Keep in mind that the guy had ALL the information... So if Longcoolmother's dad didn't pay up, God knows what would've happened to longcool and family :( His dad maybe thinking at the time that $800 would be a small price to pay for the criminals to leave them alone altogether. Analogy time... If someone held a gun to your head and wanted your car, you're obviously going to give him the keys. They're holding the cards... Good luck with the situation man... ... sends prayers

exactly, if $800 could solve the problems, then by all means go for it. but i guess he was in a kinda tuff situation. i mean, paying might not make it better, but it probably wont make it any worse. in the position he was in, i guess he didnt have much time to think of what to decide. well, im just glad its all over now...thanks for your supports, its greatly appreciated

Well, my dad went to the police station...called the fraud protection agencies...tried EVERYTHING. And nobody would listen. We were so mad at the police

Not to be heartless or mean or anything, but when the guy called up your dad to meet him for extortion, why did ne not contact the police then? What that guy did was extortion and I may not know the laws of your state, but it souinds like a punishible offense.

The police do not take much interest in this kind of case because theyhave to catch the person in the act and it takes quite afew resources to go after one low life. This type of crime is the worst because any greedy little loser can perpetrate it. In your dads case it seems he got pikced out by a well organized group.

This should be a lesson to everyone... guard your social security number with your life. The only people who should have it are the IRS, your work, and the bank.

damn, yet another reason why I'm not liking our school.. everyone's SSN is plastered on their papers and everything.. it's used as our student id. Identity theft has shown it's ugly head more often now, and yet our school still just uses it as our SID... grrrr.

I guess they figure that college students have no money anyways, so they wouldn't be the primary target for ID theft. My school used SSN as well.

That's awful man. Unfortunately what your dad should have done when he met that dude was have the police called immediately. That sounded very suspicious and the dude should have been arrested. Hopefully things will work out.

LongCoolMOther, your father should get a copy of his credit report ASAP.

https://www.econsumer.equifax.com/webapp/ConsumerProducts/pgConsumerProducts is a place where i have done so. i chose the $8.50 option. consider choosing the annual option to maintain your eye on the dealings.

read it, print, and look for any abnormalities of which your dad should see a lot.

i am chinese too, and my parents dont tell me anything. we're cantonese. needless to say, i am wiser than they are when it comes to things. my parents bought a(nother) house without consulting me. it screwed things up big time. what is it with our chinese parents =\

good luck.

LongCoolMother (and everyone else)

I remember hearing on a call in radio show how you can now call the credit reporting agencies and have some kind of a flag placed on your accounts. This won't help in the case of a stolen card, but it will for identity theft.

What happens is every time a new line of credit is opened in your name it won't be approved until the credit agency can get a verbal okay from you. I don't remember if there is a special number to call or not, but it's worth looking into.

You are allowed to request an alternate number. I would do so. The school does it this way cause it is easy. The federal government does this. For example on a pilot's license youare supposed to enter your ssn for your license number, but there is a check box if you would like to use an alternate number. If your school pushes the issue, I would let them know it is probably illegal for them to ask you for your ssn.

this is harsh but your dad is a moron. he rolled over and played dead while he was extorted of his money. The reason these guy do this scam is that they know the majority of the people will pay them. I dont blame your mom for getting pissed. There were plenty of choices and paying some crook 800 bucks to make his problems go away was the wrong choice.
