Hmm, from your title i though you and your dad were playing BF1942 and he was planestealing.

Just this week i told my dad i could replace his 500mhz compac with a 1.8 gig athlon XP system for a total of 40 bucks for a new motherboard.

While i was at work he went and bought a p4 2 gig DDR setup in parts from compusa and assembled them during the day.

Its a nice rig but being compusa he overpaid for sure.

Oh well, just got to suck it up and live with it i guess, i wouldnt let it bother you that much. I mean your ego is going to hurt you infinately more than it will ever help you.

Yes, you're overreacting. He's being practical, you're being a putz.

That retard in hebrew right?

Anyway, don't take it too hard. Maybe you'll have other opportunities later on. Also, show him for the same price what you can build him versus Dell.

putz loosely translates to penis, or dick, in yiddish.
I was always told it translates to a discarded foreskin after a circumcision....correcto on the yiddish.

I would thank the stars if my dad bought a Dell instead of having me build his PCs (I've built his last 4 systems).

No more 24/7 free tech support from me! 🙂

If you build a computer for someone, you are free tech support for the computer's life or yours, whichever is longer. Be glad your dad is getting a Dell.

no $hit I agree

I had a similar situation occur a few years ago. (back when P2-400s were new)

My mom wanted to get a PC for her work and I told them I'll build one for them. I wasn't going to charge them for it, since I know her boss, he's a good guy, etc.

Anyways, she said "you're gonna be at work fulltime (I'm a s/w developer) and I don't want to bother you at work."

So, they went against my recommendations and bought a Dell. Mind you, this is when Dell used more proprietary parts (unlike today, where you generally get intel motherboards and decent parts from them) and was generally more expensive than a DIY job.

The reason they went to Dell? Because they needed "the support".

Well, guess who got the phone call when stuff was wrong with the PC? Hint- not dell!

Unfortunately, once you get the title of "family PC expert", you are gonna get the support phone calls from all your family members, including 2nd and 3rd cousins you didn't know you had.

I can see how the OP was a little upset, because chances are he will be called when there is a problem. The OP feels like his opinion isn't as valued, yet knows it will be when things go wrong.

Like I said, I can semi-relate to this.

Just my $0.02,

-Matt

Who buids systems anymore? The big name's make the cheeper and faster anyway... You should get out of the hardware business and into the service business. Tell you dad not to buy the extended service, instead charge him $50 less for the same three years. Don't include parts. hehe.

You're forgetting that you don't actually get the software with a Dell. You get a "rescue CD" which is a POS IMO. It's not like you can use that CD to load up WinXP on any other machine other than the Dell it came with.

It's not a "real copy" of the OS.

Its a full version of WinXP, but its set up with a detector so that it wont install on a non-Dell motherboard. It will however, auto-install on any Dell based motherboard with full licensing.

I think Dell did that because a lot of the hot deals people/people in general were pawning WinXP licenses that came with their systems for $$.

You whiny little putz. Your daddy should just backhand you right in the mouth and lock you in the garage for a week with no food. It's his house, his money, his time and his decision. Your dad was actually DOING STUFF on his own without your expert tuttelage long before you showed up, bucko.

Go play some Nintendo w/your other SK8T@R spoiled brat fubu pants wearing kid friends and you can all bitch about your parents together.

Little whiny toad.

Your dad is actually a smart guy. You are away, you cannot service it. Dell has a reputation for service.

It's not like you are losing anything from this...you are taking it entirely too personally. I LOVE IT, LOVE IT TO DEATH when a family member says they're gonna buy a computer cause i hate the hassle that goes with building one. In fact I refuse it now unless its immediate family.
