So I tried turning my machine on for a second with no heat sink, a little puff of smoke came up and the core's now purple. It's and AMD Athlon 1800+ btw. This means it's dead right?

You let the smoke out!!?? Don't you know that circuits run on smoke! If you let the smoke out, then they no longer function ;).

Seriously though, it's dead. With no thermal protection, the 1800+ fries in an instant with no HSF installed. Core temps often get over 200C, far above the 80-90C it can tolerate. I also have to ask, why did you do this? Did you mistake it for a P4 (or P3 for that matter)?

Hey, speak for yourself buddy :D *gets out magic wand* Minn3h, at this point, you don't have anything to lose by putting on your heatsink properly (reference guide here, please look at Figures 7, 13 and 14 in particular) and seeing if the CPU will run. But the chances are not so good, if your motherboard is an older one with no thermal protection circuitry.

Do remember that there needs to be some kind of thermal-transfer compound between the core and the heatsink, and do review the photos in that guide so you know that the heatsink only goes on one direction. And don't ever fire up a modern CPU without its heatsink installed. Wrap your hand around a 60-watt lightbulb for about five seconds, and now imagine all that heat being concentrated on just your thumbnail... yep. :)

Actually, I didn't do it, my dad did. We were trying to get a computer to run right, but we had a 1800 and a 2000 and he was switching them back and forth a lot. One time he just got lazy and decided to try it without the heatsink (I wasn't there). Told me what happened later. So I took the chip to school to give to a friend to test for me, because we got the machine running with the 2000, but he said he didn't want to because it might damage his motherboard. So I said okay, I don't need it anymore, and gave it to my friend, who gave it to someone else who threw it away. So now my dad decides it was still working and is charging my $20 for losing it. I'm not paying him because from what I hear, it was dead, who pays $20 for a useless piece of plastic?

Just make a bet with your dad that the XP2000+ will burn-up within 10sec with-out a HS/fan and tell him if it does burn-up, then you don't owe him $20. I doubt he takes you up on the bet. If he does, show him our spacious For Sale/Trade Forum. :)
