My computer wont play any games other than counter-Strike.

My computer isnt too bad of a rig. I really only bought it to play counter-strike and it does play that well. But, recently I've tried to play Halo, Morrowind, and PlanetSide. All of these get about 30 seconds into the game, and will just freeze up. EVERY TIME. CS plays fine, but any other game is either extremely laggy and then close out, or just wont even get past the start screen. Why is it like this, and what the hell can I do to stop this. I want to be able to play Halo basically.

Nvidia ti 4200 64
AThlon T-Bird 1.4
iWill k266r
512mb RAM
120 Gig Maxtor HDD
All current drivers

So, why is my computer so flaky when it ocmes to newer games?

My brother said taht I should just upgrade my PCU, mobo, and get newer ram...any suggestions??

What are your temps?

Have you run Memtest 86 to check for bad memory?

What OS? Patched and Service Packed?

Is it stable in a windows enviroment?

Nope, not running any temperature monitors, good idea though.

Windows XP Professional, it's a patched version, not retailed.

And yes, it's stable in windows, any problems only occur during gameplay.

Thanks though...

erinstall windows. reinstall drivers.

try a different video card. maybe its overheating😛 doubtful though.

No need for a hardware upgrade, you are just having some stability problems..

Did you run Memtest 86?

"Not running any temP""" CHECK THE BIOS!!!

Is the fan on your video card spinning?

THe fan on my VidCard is running.

I DL'd Memtest, and it's not working correctly or soemthing. I cant even get it open. *noob*

And if I were to check my BIOS, I've got no idea what to look for, and how to tell if it's supposed to be that way. *noob again*

All help is greatly appreciated.

No prob.. For memtest you need to make a bootable floppy disk...

BootDisk can help you..

When you start your PC up you hit Delete ( may be F10 or something ) But chances are it's delete to enter setup..

Under Standard BIOS features you want to make sure your first boot device is the Floppy (A:\)

To check temps you just need to search around, the "Pc health" or something to that effect.

Oh, nothing.

If you like wallhacking, cheating, aimbotting, pre-pubescant n00bs calling you a "l337 h4x0r" or "ch34t3r" when you shoot them

I liked CS 2-3 years ago, and went off it strongly about 2 years ago, and haven't played it once since BF1942 came out.

Confused

depends on what servers you play on. another thing is that it's fun when you beat the walls... OWNED!!!

Miklebud,BIOS guide
here .Look for health status section or hardware monitor section to check temps.

I always disable all video shadowing, disable system bios cacheable, disable video ram cacheable, disable fastwrites. You could also try slower ram timings that might help with gaming stability ,also found in BIOS.

You should make sure you`ve latest VIA AGP installed being yours is a VIA board, I presume you`re using latest Nvidia reference drivers & what PSU do you`ve & also have you tried reinstalling DX9.0B?

Heat is possible considering how much heat the Tbird 1.4 spits out. So if you find that to be the problem, I suppose you could upgrade.

I dont think heat is a big issue, the fans in my case are really powerful, and blow lots of cool air throughout the computer. But again, I havent used a temperature monitor, so I'm just ASSUMING. 😛

I'm gonna run Memtest when I've got the time, and then I'll tweak with my BIOS.

Hopefully I'll be able to get SOME other games able to run on this rig. Otherwise, I'll be looking to upgrade a whole lot(Radeon 9800, 2+Ghz, more Ram, Quieter fans)over a period of time. 🙂

Oh yeah, and there's NOTHING wrong with Counter-Strike. It just gets a little boring when you play it all the time, and go 50-3 on some servers...change is good sometimes.

As long as you keep your case clean... like, open it up and clean the dust out about twice a year... it shouldn't be overheating.

Could be a failing power supply though... did this always happen, or did you just recently try playing other games? The Via 266 chipset was famous for undervolting the CPU so much that when you put a load on the video card it locks up or just reboots. Maybe you should get Motherboard Monitor and keep an eye on all your voltages and temperatures and fan speeds and whatnot.

Yeah actually that's what happens, the games just lock up and it will just close out and go back to windows. Other times ( with other games ) it would just reboot the computer. It actually used to beboot my computer after about 45 minutes of CS, but I did something with my Windows memory and it fixed it. Now I can ONLY Play CS. 😛

Oh, and I ran the Memtest 86, I booted it up last night about 12, I let it run til 7:30 this morning and it had only gotten 6 Tests done. I went to work, came back and it had only done 29 Tests. So I said screw it after about 15 hours. Is taht...normal...for memtest to take taht long? It had said that there had been 0 errors within those 15 hours...help.

The board he has is a VIA KT133A chipset not 266,
link .

But I didnt really let it get ALL the way through the memtest...does that matter??

Oh my God! I just got the real version of Halo (non-trial) and I get to the opening sequence and as soon as I am able to look around manually, Halo shuts down. And says in a windows like screen, "Gathering Exception Data" No clue about that one... I just want to be able to play these games without any problems 🙁
