You could install the DOS mode drivers for your cd-rom. That will work too, although its not ideal. :)

I really wish there was some kind of fix for this also as I'm dealing with the exact same issue at work. I've tried everything I can think of up to this point and when I go in tomorrow I'll try the ideas posted in this thread. It would be nice if I didn't have to wipe one of our ORACLE developer's machines because of this.

Well, I tried the things suggested in the thread and none of them worked for me either. However, I did get the CD back:) After a great deal of time and swearing, I was ready to give up and reformat when I decided to give it one more last ditch effort. I opted to search through the registry for the term "ide" ( I won't try that one again, it took me an hour and a half to go through it all:|) What I found is this, under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services|class\hdc" there are keys for each hard drive controller installed. The ones with values that matched the problem devices in system properties, I deleted. Also, under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\mf" there are keys for the same except these have either "good" or "bad" in the values. I removed the bad ones. When I was done, I rebooted and Windows found the Primary and Secondary (dual fifo) controllers that it was supposed to have and the CD was back. I suppose one could search the registry for the term "bad" to find the bad ones but there are several keys and values with that combination of letters so you have to pay attention to what you are reading. Hope this helps, it did for me.:D

you are the man

i did what u said to do, deleted all bad files etc, rebooted, nothing happend, i then removed all off the ide controlers in the registerys, deleted every trace of via and 'ide' on both my hard disks, deleted all the pci to agp etc from the DM, and rebooted, nothing was found again, and the cd rom was still gone, so i downloaded the 4 in 1s, installed them, rebooted, windows found new hardware, rebooted, windows found new hard ware, rebooted, and looked in my computer and the cd rom had reappeared :D

thank you and everyone for their help :D
