Well, I've decided to go against popular opinion on here. I have money in the bank, and I love my cat and we will fight! I have authorized the surger/biopsy for Monday. I will update later.
I am a big time animal lover, but I, too, was leaning towards advising you to gently let go, given the circumstances as they were outlined here.

However . . .

GOOD ON YOU, MATE! This is what money is for, after all, to protect those we love. Grace comes unbidden and has no preconditions. You are the conduit of God's Grace here for your kitty. Let no mealy minded scoffer dare tell you otherwise!

When we act out of love, we are God in action. This cannot be addressed, let alone gainsayed by the so-called rational mind. Love is unassailable by logic, and Love Saves the Day!
Nice, thank you.

Well, here's an update. After the biopsies and all the testing, there's nothing physically wrong with him! Our best guess now, is that he was depressed because we had to leave him and the other cat for 1 or 2 weeks at a time with only a neighbor checking on them. I think he got depressed and needed the human touch and loving. They say cats can be like that. It's been an expensive lesson, but I hope he fully recovers. I visited him at the cat hospital this past weekend and it was a nice visit. I got him to purrrr and lay on me and sleep. I feel good about my decision now, but I'm still dreading the final bill!

This isnt about the money, this is about whether or not you want your cat to go through all this.
I would have him put down, and I love my animals.

I'd be hard pressed to spend that kind of cash on my dog, let alone my cats. We have had many (>10) cats over my lifetime, and we never spent more vet money on them than just the regular vaccinations. We put them down ourselves if they needed it. Cats are good about dying though. They usually find a good hiding spot in the field and just go to sleep.

Its easier to get attached to dogs though.. I could see myself spending upward of a 1-2 thousand, but anything more than that, i dont think I could justify.

edit: btw, fat cats FTW! We used to have on that weighed over 30lbs. Its stomach dragged on the ground when it walked, but youd never believe how fast the damn thing could move. It could easily catch its own dinner still. Oreo died of a heart attack at around 10 years old. :)

If I spend more than $1500 a month on my pet kids, someone else has to spend $500 a month on me, otherwise I'm on the street. :(

He's finally back at my parents' house. I picked him up from the animal hospital and it cost me $4,000! I had spent about $1,000 before that on this mystery illness. It's all on my American Express, but I'm glad he's recovered.

Glad to hear the cat is ok but that is a healthy chunk out of the old wallet.

I noticed you mentioned paying for tooth extraction, every vet keeps trying to hit me up with this for the dog but I won't go for it. Remember that vets. are in business and some of the services they provide are as useful as headlight fluid for your car.

In the future, get some pet insurance, much like with people insurance, it saves you a LOT of money when things go south. Also, good on you for not going the easy path and letting your cat die.

$4,000!
That's quite the sum! Mind you, if I could, I'd pay it in a heartbeat to save my dog.

Difficult choice to be made and you made the honorable one - kudos to you. Hope your cat realizes how much he owes you - the dude should clean his own litter and get a part time job to show his appreciation ;)

OP, glad to hear your feline friend is OK.

I'm deathly afraid of something happening to my cat, because there's no way in hell I'd be able to afford a $4000 vet bill. Though, if I had it, I'd spend it in a heartbeat to save my cat or dog. For the love and companionship they give me, I owe them no less then every measure I can afford to take for them.

Glad to hear he's doing alright. I wouldn't go into debt to save my cat, but if I had the money I probably would do it as long as he would have a good quality of life after the operation.

But seriously, if you were to spend 2600 and your cat still died...
I would look for other options.

I painted a face on a rock and gave it a name. Its been good for like 8 years now.

the cat was your friend, i think its worth any price to try save a friend. (so long as the cat is actually gonna be ok afterward and not suffer in pain until it dies)

If I get cat or dog in the future, when I adopt I am going to make the decision to either put them down when the bills get too expensive or I will buy pet insurance. On top of it all, you do have the quality of life issue to consider. With people it is no problem to keep them in a hospital hooked up to machines. It is what we do, and people have the mental capacity to understand what is happening to them. Animals don't have the capacity to understand. I love my pets, but I would never put my selfish desires to have them around over their quality of life.

That being said, I am glad that your cat pulled through and is doing well!!!

Glad to hear he is ok. It is amazing how the vet bills can add up now that they are using the same technologies they use on people for our pets. I would hazard a guess that we have spent close to 20K over the years on vet bills for our dogs and cats and I don't regret a single cent of it.

When we got our pets we agreed on a $500 limit on any one time procedure.
Anything more than that won't happen.
