My cat is sick and I have a decision to make...

I've had him and the other cat that showed up at my door for about 7 years. I love my cats but they've been living with my parents since Hurricane Katrina destroyed my house.

Anyway, a few months back one of them (the really fat one) stopped eating and it took some time and money to figure out the problem and treat him. He has fully recovered, although his weight is not going down like the vets would have liked. Anyway, I spend around $1500 on him.

Now, for the past month or so, my other cat has barely eaten anything. I boarded him at a vet's office over the holidays for two weeks. They tested him and he never hardly ate anything. Cost of boarding + tests + teeth extractions = ~ $1000.

I brought him to a specialist yesterday for more testing. She called me today with this information. All signs point to a liver problem. Cost to biopsy = $1000 and he also needs a feeding tube to get food and medicine in him. He may have to have that for up to two months. The cost of them keeping him and feeding him through this tube and taking care of him would be $27/day. If it went on for two months, that would be $1600. Anyway, that's a lot of money and I don't know if I should go through with it... I love my cat and have been hoping to have them back in my house when I finish rebuilding it in a few months. This is tough. :(

Edit: How much would you spend to try and save your pets?

Update (2/13/07): He's still on a feeding tube but he's making progress!

Update 2 (3/13/07): I got him out of the hospital last week. He's home and doing well. But... final bill for this vet when I picked him up: $4,000! Ouch!

At this point I wouldn't even look at it as a cost issue, I would look at it as a quality of life issue. Is your cat really going to appreciate living during that time? Is it a guarantee that after max 2 month period it will be fully recovered and healthy? It sounds like it is time for the cat to go on, I know how hard of a decision that can be to make. :(

Also, as weird as this may sound, try to find an integrated vet in your area. These vets practice holistic medicine as well as traditional medicine, and may have a better solution for you.

It's time.

Even if you spent the $1600 there are no guarantees it would "cure" the cat.

Yeah, I wanna call back and ask about the chances of a full recovery. BTW, it would be $1000 up front for biopsies and then up to the $1600 for keeping him up to two months.

Get a pet rock. They hardly ever die and can be used as a weapon.

But seriously, if you were to spend 2600 and your cat still died...
I would look for other options.

This is why I have pet insurance, so I can make the choice with my heart and not my pocketbook. But even removing the dollar figures from it, I don't think I'd want to see either of my cats having to be tube-fed.

It may be time to let go. :(

You bring much needed amusement to this thread. Thank you.:D

I found that Googer amputation thread. It would be funnier if I wasn't so down right now.

I've heard of that recently. How much do you pay? I guess I'll Google it.

I support pet euthenasia. There is no sense in making them suffer worse or endagering yourself financially for a desperate chance.
Love them and let them go.

When your heart can take it, get another one.

putting the monetary issue aside, i doubt the cat will enjoy life during this period. it may be time to put him to sleep. :(

IIRC, I pay about CDN$15 a month for a dog and two cats. Covers everything except for hip dysplasia, since that was classed as a "possible genetic defect" in the lab. :(

My policy, and I assume most others, have a waiting period and require vet-signed health checkups before they go into effect, so it may not be of help to you now.

I told the vet I was contemplating euthanasia. She thought I should let her do the biopsy and treat him. I don't know if she just wants the money, I hope not. And, I wanna be able to say I did everything I could. I guess I have the money, but it certainly could be spent on other things...

It sounds like the best case would be one month of feeding tube + meds after the biopsy. So maybe another $2300 on top of the almost $1500 that I've spent on him already...

I know you love your animals and I can definitely see your plight, but spending that amount of money for a questionable quality of life for a pet simply isn't fair to you or the cat, sometimes you just have to let them go.

Whatever her motivation, it your decision, not hers. I agree with what others have said. It is time to let go.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but at this stage you're probably looking at measuring Kittah's lifespan in months, even if the biopsy is successful. And the quality of life for those months would be pretty diminished. Will you want to be the one to have to feed him through a tube? I get all emo just thinking about how sad that cat's going to look at you when you do that. :(

Sadly, it sounds like she might just be milking you for money at this point.

I'm sorry your kitty is sick. My wife and I have always had a herd of critters we love around the house. Your situation is why we sat down a long time ago and decided what we were willing to spend to care for our 'herd.'

The thing is you have to do this before you're in an emotional state. I know this doesn't help you right now but, try to think it through for the future. Please don't get caught in the, "I spent this much on this pet so, I should spend that much on the other pet," quandry. Every situation and pet is different.

To the poster from Canada. I wish pet insurance was as cheap in the states but, comparable insurance here costs $40 USD per pet per month. I kid you not.

Well, I've decided to go against popular opinion on here. I have money in the bank, and I love my cat and we will fight! I have authorized the surger/biopsy for Monday. I will update later.

The feeding tube is necessary because I let this go so long without bringing him to a specialist. That was partially my fault and I feel like partially the fault of the other vet who kept him over the holidays for not advising me sooner. Anyway, this specialist says that the cats she's used the feeding tube on don't really mind it. I hope it will be for maximum of 1 month and that he'll be back to normal for a good while after that. I just can't give up on him yet. I want him back at my home where he can go outside and give those squirrels hell again! :)

I am a big time animal lover, but I, too, was leaning towards advising you to gently let go, given the circumstances as they were outlined here.

However . . .

GOOD ON YOU, MATE! This is what money is for, after all, to protect those we love. Grace comes unbidden and has no preconditions. You are the conduit of God's Grace here for your kitty. Let no mealy minded scoffer dare tell you otherwise!

When we act out of love, we are God in action. This cannot be addressed, let alone gainsayed by the so-called rational mind. Love is unassailable by logic, and Love Saves the Day!
