I'm Black...not that I didn't already know that. They were able to trace on my Mom's side that I am a descendant from some Pygmy tribes from central Africa, but I only have 0.6% of that which explains why I am not short. It also turns out I am most likely related to a half-blood Cherokee Chief George Washington Welch who was born in 1788. Interesting stuff.

I ran into a guy at a bar this weekend, started talking family stuff, and turns out we had the same great great grandparents. great conversation, fun to explore the history (for better and worse!)

i have always wanted to get that done, but am worried that the data will be used against me somehow in the future in some horrible way

it seems super neat though

My little brother had that done. He said through our European roots we were some how related to the Roman Emperor Constantine. But I find it kind of hard to believe that they could trace back a family line that far back.

I'm kind of curious how accurate that is. My grandmother on my Dad's side of the family can trace her roots back to the Revolutionary War in this country. She is actually a DAR (Daughter of the American Revolution) which I guess makes me a SAR??? I don't even know if there is such a thing. 😀

My Mom's side are just immigrant scum from Sweden who came here during the late 1800s.

Damn man, I could set up a website like this and perform fortune reading to complete strangers, make up some bullshits about them relating to some awesome beings somewhere sometime long ago, however little, and PROFIT!!!

Because you know, there's no proof whatsoever.

Just go to a genealogy site and trace it back. Get your family tree in the process.

We have ours back to the 1700's mostly.

We've traced our family tree back to the early 1800s but records become spotty before then. Apparently the family on my mom's mom's side was quite well off until their daughter married a commoner, who we're descended from. There's a long been a rumour that they were noble but that could just be BS. Though if they were, I definitely taking back the title and making a claim for the throne. No more German Kings and Queens in Buckingham I say.

My dad's mom is from the clan Maxwell in Scotland, which can be traced back to viking warriors who invaded the British Isles. Which explains why many of us have fair hair and blue eyes.

My dad's dad and mom's dad don't seem to come from interesting stock. The origin of our last name is a mystery, as it's not a common one. Could possibly be Welsh. I do have a distant relative that actually lives in Ottawa, which I only found out recently. It's a small world.

That's pretty cool OP.

<-- boring white guy, so I doubt anything interesting would come out of mine.

interested in doing this.. Can anyone recommend the best sites for doing this?

I used 23andMe to get my genetic ancestry. Ancestry.com let's you search records to find your ancestors but you have to pay monthly for that. They also do genetic ancestry.

I have a coworker who does this - to an extent, it's pretty neat. But, it appears she puts hundreds of hours into it each year. Sure, it's a hobby... but personally, if someone called me and "hey, you don't know me but your grandmother was my grandmother's 3rd cousin. I found a picture of you online, and you look just like my great great grandmother's sister." - I think you're going a bit too far.

If you are considered a human, then your matrilineage either goes back to the neanderthal eve or a female monkey (which has a mitochondrial dna traced back to a mixture of the other four kingdoms and some elements of the earth), so it isnt that interesting to me.

That said, my maternal grandfather's mother was descended from English FFV (came in at jamestown), his father was patrilineally descended from a scots-irishman who came to the 13 colonies in 1753 and he is descended from henry viii on one side. my maternal grandmother was born in eastern europe, but she either didnt know her origins or didnt want to talk about them (i am a second generation american).

my dad's father was french on his mother's side (i dont know whether it is true that i have native american in me) and my surname is of welsh origin. and i think my dad's matrilineage came in on the mayflower; i know his mother was descended from edward iii.

i guess what makes me proudest about my ancestry is that i have no ancestors who fought for the union while all of my maternal grandfather's known male ancestors who were available to fight in the war to preserve u.s. govt revenue fought for the CSA. unfortunately, two of his uncles (one on each side) were gassed in the first half of wilson's war but at least he survived the second half without any life long injuries and without becoming an officer.
