We've traced our family tree back to the early 1800s but records become spotty before then.

My aunt is obsessed with tracing out family tree. it's very detailed back to late 1800's. it still detailed until the late 1600's. I had a copy of it (in a huge binder) until she put on disk with some software

it goes back to some German towns. still have some family living there.

which I guess makes me a SAR??? I don't even know if there is such a thing.

yes because i am a member of SAR as well. my 7th great grandfather was in the revolutionary war along with his sons. also both of my great great grand fathers were in the civil war. my dad side was confederate and my moms was union.

the very first of my ancestors to come to the new world were two brothers who landed in what is now the hamptons. they came from Kent England around the mid 1630's. so my family has been in this country for a long time. over the past 380 years my family migrated south long the eastern coast, then across to mississippi, Louisiana, texas, arkansas and now me in Colorado. the other brothers line went the north route ohio, Illinois, wisconsin.

yes i got obsessed with it. i just wished i did this when my parents were alive they would found it very interesting.

I did the National Geographic's Geno 2.0 test last winter. My family is from The South and the prevailing myth among many families from there is Cherokee ancestry "way back" in the family. Turns out we're completely European (mostly Northern). My sister was really into this family myth - she had all sorts of Native American brick-a-brack and tacky paintings all over her house and wore her hair long and in braids. Needless to say she was not amused at the findings. :D She was sure we were at least 1/8th, maybe more.

Only really interesting this was that our "Hominid" ancestry (Neanderthal) was a quite high 5.6% The average for non-Africans is 3-4%. I'm rather happy about that for some reason. :)

My little brother had that done. He said through our European roots we were some how related to the Roman Emperor Constantine. But I find it kind of hard to believe that they could trace back a family line that far back.

Yes, they often say that type of thing to entice you further; who wants to be told they are only related to some Ukrainian dirt farmer or Hitler's dog groomer.

I said that someone from ATOT is my dad. No one cared. :(

I thought it was funny.

My Mom was adamant that her Grandmother was a "Cherokee Indian" because she had straight black hair LOL. She was right but she sure wasn't 100% Native American. What I find interesting is that there is almost no Black Americans that were descendants of slaves that are 100% African anymore.

BTW I am 0.9% Neanderthal.

I used 23andMe to get my genetic ancestry. Ancestry.com let's you search records to find your ancestors but you have to pay monthly for that. They also do genetic ancestry.

The libraries around here have ancestry.com memberships you can use for free. Might be worth looking into for anyone who's interested but doesn't want to buy the subscription.

Psh... 3.1% here.

I think that unofficially gives me the right to bang on my chest in protest or in celebration of things.

I agree that the "who you are related to" section is likely BS but it 100% tells you where your Y chromosome and mitochondria comes from. So it's something.

I have a whole thread on this if you're interested in reading about how the results are gathered and what it actually means.

Keep in mind that we do not know all of the genetic diversity of Neanderthals nor exactly how much is in Africans and then by that measure exactly how much is in Non-Africans because we compare Africans and Non-Africans to guess how much Neanderthal ancestry is in Non-Africans which means we are discounting all Neanderthal ancestry that is in Africans. And because we do not know all of the genetic diversity of the Neanderthals There is Neanderthal ancestry in the current human population which we do not know is actually Neanderthal genetics.

23andMe only found my genetic ancestry. I found out about Cherokee Chief from someone else on 23andMe (a relative that I found on 23andMe), that is pretty serious about finding her ancestry . So I found out that this chief is how me and this other 23andMe member are related (through a European line actually).

I'd like to do this just to see what illnesses I'm susceptible to. I know for the most part I'm German, Irish and Polish and there may be some Prussian in there.

Last I checked the DNA places have regular prices, but also have sales at MUCH lower prices from time to time.

Trouble with family or even official records is that people LIED. DNA will eventually cause many some surprises.

I never thought about if those sites have info on heights of people in your lineage. Like if the OP found out if there were other tall relatives going way back in contrast to the shorter pygmies.
