Yeah hammer and wood, I know.

PROBLEM: If you got a "gnarly" CPU like I do, one which looks already like Neanderthals used it...I can see using the vice method smashing out even more pins. I likely won't use a hammer on this CPU where pins are *already* flaking off.

In hindsight now I wished I made some photos...

Sorry you had so much trouble with your delid. I was convinced I had ruined my CPU when I nicked the PCB in a few places, but it made no difference that I can tell. Everything still works. It's worse on an AMD CPU, since you have a bunch of actual pins you can bend/break, whereas Intel CPUs just have the pads.

I think everyone goes through an emotional roller-coaster when attempting such an operation.

vise method works the best period.

i think i have a 3770k and 4770k and a 4970k to do soon...

my 3770k is getting toasty...

I read a post somewhere else which I think explains WHY I had troubles delidding.

Someone reported that utility cutters are still way too thick to cut under the IHS ..even those common DIY hobby razors can be too thick. The person said he was only able to cut with the extremely thin shaving razors, he actually destroyed two CPU with the cutters...
This was exactly the impression I had, that the blades were too thick to even get under the IHS. As far as I remember I cut into the sides of the IHS multiple times...

The irony is that I had this "advice" with the DIY cutters from another board where someone "recommended" NOT to use the super-thin blades because there is danger to cut into the PCB. (Obviously this "advice" was wrong and had almost cost me my CPU).

As for now, I am resisting the itch to try the delid again (it's really something going against my OCCT.... OCD :) I mean....since I hate how hot this CPU gets). But I am trying to resist the urge seeing that the CPU is "gnarly" and already lost pins, probably from the pre-owner. (The temps I am seeing in OCCT I don't see even in heavy gaming, BF4 etc. barely goes to 70dec. I am telling myself that a working CPU that gets hot only under extreme stress-testing is better than a non-working one).

I would probably long gotten a vise and just smashed off the cap...but with THIS CPU I am really hesitant to smash it with a hammer :)

Based on what you report, my conclusion would be that someone already delidded your CPU and reglued the IHS with an epoxy, probably damaging the pins in the process.

Once they realized they weren't going to get a golden OC, they sold it used.

Why would you do such a thing, IDC???

J/K ;)

OP, I hope you learned a valuable lesson here. Not sure why you had to buy used for mission-critical CPU, but even if you ignore that, when you tried to cut and it was rock-hard, you shoulda just stopped and asked here for advice on what to do next. :)

I guess it depends on which hobby knives you use. I used a #1 X-acto with #11 blades which were easily able to fit under the IHS on my A10. Maybe the epoxy bond thickness is different on Haswell CPUs?

I think that I'd slap a peltier on it before I took a knife to it.

Well you see this is where the OCD comes in :)

For me this sounds like having the AC on and then turn on a space heater because you're cold. Obviously you would want to fix the "root problem" first :)
