Alright all ready,
We have a member (admittedly with a high end motherboard and RAM) GAMING well on a $150 FX-8150.

That is necessary and sufficent.
If the FX chips were totally marvelous they would not be priced so low.

Buy what you like and enjoy it.
He who has the most fun wins.

Agreed. I actually paid $170 for mine but your point is well made. Sorry this thread has eroded into a "Hatfield and McCoy" saga! My purpose was not to incite but give "insight";)

As PileDriver is about to burst onto the scene I think it's time to close this thread down. Thanks to all for input etc.

BTW, today Newegg dropped the price of the 8150 to $169.99 until 10/4! Sounds like PileDriver must be right around the corner.

Here's a confusing one for yah. I turned off turbo-core and GW2 hits 60 fps where it was stuck at 55fps no matter what setting or resolution when turbo core would kick up to 4.2 but lower RAM to ~1520mhz.

Doesn't surprise me. The 4.2 "turbo" is only running 4 cores/2 modules. I disabled the turbo mode in my BIOS and have my 8150 running on all 8 cores/4 modules at 4.5Ghz (21 x 215 @1.4 v) Runs much better. Need VG cooling to run at this speed 24/7, thus the Corsair H100:cool:

That would explain my perplexed mind as to why I couldnt just oc to 4.2 yet turbo core could. I'm on a h60, may be time to upgrade.

what guarantees that the threads get scheduled on the fastest cores?
Nothing does unless you go to the tedious task, if it can be done, of measuring core speeds. Since the 8150 is really 2 cores per module I think the best that can be done is to measure each of the 4 modules.

The technical aspect of what 4 cores (2 modules) of the 8150 are disabled during the 4.2 "Turbo" mode is way above my "pay grade". Perhaps someone familiar with this could chime in.

As I mentioned above, I took the "easy" way out and disabled the Turbo mode. I run all 8 cores at the same speed.

I don't know how the OS then determines which core(cores) handles it.

I didn't know 5-10%, and only in certain scenarios, meant huge. It's still laughably slow for an ''eight-core'' processor.

Its not always the numbers on paper. Its the user experience improvement... And what other 8 core processor can we compare to? LOL

In the desktop? None, because the 6-core i7-3930K horribly smashes it in performance.

It does cost a pretty penny at $550, though. If you want something in a more reasonable budget the 2500K and 3570K are faster, too.

Fanboi/;)

Its pretty obvious you're going to take every opportunity to toot intels horn. Whatever floats your boat. But this thread is really about the 8150 experience. Not really about price comparisons to the IB stuff. I own both, but I really want to talk about the 8150 instead of getting derailed by troll-bait into the same bs going on in 4 other threads.

Intel makes pretty awesome CPUs. Admittedly, AMD makes some pretty awesome graphics cards.

As for the FX-8150 experience in comparison to the Core i5-2500K and 3570K, here's the summary: it's slower, sometimes significantly so, and uses twice the amount of power.

My buddies i5 seemed to have visual artifacts while browsing the desktop, hitchiness issues as well. I find the AMD a much smoother experience.

lol and that is suppose to mean what?

For all we know he is a noob that is using improper cooling. Unless you provide alittle more detail this means nothing.

I posted a question in the OS section of the forum about Win 8 vs Win 7 in the 8150. Since Win 8 isn't officially released yet the answer may not be known. I know that in a few reviews with earlier versions of Win 8 there appeared to be no difference from Win 7.

^ I believe Anand did an article on it and the difference was negligible.

Install the patches and see for yourself, whats the fun in looking at numbers? Roll up your sleeves and participate in the life of it.

You'd be suprised how incorrect general consensus can be when you find things out for yourself.

I don't get sucked into the whole experience hype.
