My 79yo father fell in his assisted living facility today UPDATED

My 79yo father took a nasty fall today at his assisted living facility this evening and it was bad enough to cause a seizure and vomiting. Those of you who pray, I appreciate your prayers for my father.... Those of you that don't, I appreciate you thinking good thoughts towards him.

I don't expect some great ATOT effect, but I felt the need to share it with somebody...

UPDATE:
Any update?

Yes, sorry, I was out of town trying to visit him but apparently the flu is so rampant they have the place quarantined and aren't letting anyone in or out.

The back story (that I was unaware of when I posted the OP) is that he had a bad stomach flu or some sort of food poisoning so lots of diarrhea and vomiting. He was quite dehydrated and weak and was on the toilet when he felt like he was going to throw up. When he reached for the trashcan that's when he fell off the toilet and hit his head. I can only assume a combination of weakness,

He went into the hospital about 8pm EDT Friday and was released back to his facility about 1:30am Saturday. He says his head hurts and tylenol is helping but he still can't keep anything down and is very dizzy and weak and can't hardly even stand on his own. He says the aides are checking on him often making sure he is at least trying to eat crackers and ice chips / drink ginger ale / water / sprite.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!

Dude, that sucks! Did they "assist" him in falling? Seriously, they obviously didn't assist him in not falling - that's a lot of damage. No, not advocating sue, but definitely look into quality of life there. Sounds like there's not enough aides to handle their residents there.

You have no clue what an assisted living facility is do you?
Your comments border on ignorant!
If his grandfather was wheel chair or walker bound it`s possible he might have assistance.
If his grandfather was mobile mand didn`t need assitance or when asked said "No" I don`t need assistance they leave the them to there own.
If he falls and was NOT found for hours now we have a personnel and a quality of life issue!

Still, a fall that severe (severe enough to cause seizures?) means whatever was going on there should be someone nearby this location or individual where it happened. Yeah, even a simple fall can be pretty bad, but it's rare. The mere fact this happened in an assisted community seems to imply some sort of dereliction of care happened for the patient... unless there was a history of issues with this patient, in which case an aide should be assigned to him at all times regardless.

Your first 'joke' post derailing this thread was totally inappropriate. This one is even worse. Wait until the OP makes a thread about it before dragging this into the oblivion of the usual ATOT chain of events. Next step is to start blaming the op. :disgust;

To the OP - best wishes for your Dad.

If you think it was a joke, I hope to high hell you don't work in such communities. If you think this is acceptable care... :\

And yes, I wholeheartedly wish the OP's dad well and hope this wasn't a neglectful preventable accident.

You're a dick. Just because someone fell doesn't mean that there was any negligence, you can't have someone hovering over every single patient 24/7. At least wait for the details.

OP I hope your Dad gets better, that really sucks.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Depending on what level of assisted care he was in he may have had nothing that would make them think this was likely and been pretty independent. He could have just fell down walking down the hall. Older people often become a bit clumsy as they age, making them more likely to fall and less able to be able to catch themselves when they hit the ground.

To the OP, I hope your father recovers. Head injuries can be scary but people's recovery can really surprise you.

I wish the best of luck to your father and your family. About 10 years ago my grandfather slipped and hit his head on some steps while away on vacation but never made it back home. 🙁

Assisted living != nursing home != 24/7 sitter and/or restraints.

People in assisted living basically live in an apartment, with centralized dining and social activities. They function at higher levels and require less medical care than nursing home residents. The "assisted" part is varying level of assistance with bathing, dressing, preparing meals, etc. The aide comes in, does their job, and leaves.

You don't get a full time personal aide/sitter. You don't just get assigned a sitter in a full blown nursing home either. If you need one to keep your family member from getting up and falling, you have to arrange for people to sit there at $8/hr, which gets expensive.

You have absolutely NO IDEA how easy it is for people to fall. I have one sister, one aunt, and two in-laws that are nurses at nursing homes. Even at nursing homes you can't keep an eye on every single person every second of the day.
Also, a "fall" just means anything other than their hands or feet touched the ground, nothing more. I believe by law they have to call you if someone falls.
