MX510 mouse incompatible?

Motherboard is ASUS P4P800 deluxe. P4C 2.6GHz; 2X512MB Kingston DDR400; 9600 pro; Audigy2 ZS; 80GB SATA HD; 40GB PATA HD; NEC3500 DVD; XP SP2; 350W Fortron.
Had setup for a year.
Not overclocked. Passes memtest and prime95 overnight. CPU idles at 30C and loaded at 46C.

Three weeks ago, added the Audigy2 sound card. Two days after that, added the MX510 red optical mouse. Four days ago, added the NEC DVD drive.

Occasionally, when I start the computer, it goes through post and the XP logo and then the welcome screen with the hour glass. Then, the hour glass changes to an arrow and it freezes there. I have waited once for 5 minutes and it was still stuck! This problem startd only after adding the mouse.

I am not sure that it is the mouse because it does not happen all the time. It happens about once in every 10 boots.
I have had the problem with the mouse driver from the Logitech site installed as well as with no drivers installed (using the XP drivers).

I have tried boot logging and have the log for when the boot has frozen and also for when it has succeeded. There is no difference!
Is there a way to confirm 100% that it is the mouse that is the cause of the problem? If not the mouse, what could be the cause?

Has anybody had this problem?

Please make suggestions! Thanks, Navid

Do you have it connected via USB or PS2?

If you say USB then make sure you have USB mouse support enabled in your BIOS or try connecting it to the PS2 instead.

It is connected via PS2.
I followed the instructions in the manual ("desktop") and connected it that way from day 1. I have never tried USB.

I did not know that there was such an option in the bios!

I had the same problem with my logitech keyboad, but only when i installed the drivers. So I uninstalled the drivers and connected it via usb and no problems since. Of course all my extra buttons on top don't work but I don't care🙂

Thanks for the suggestions.
I did not know that I could use the USB option. The installation guide states that the USB should be used for MAC and laptops and the PS2 adapter should be used for PCs.
I am now using the USB with no problems so far. Hopefully, there will be no more freezes.
Thanks

Navid,USB can be used for anything USB wise on the PC, USB printers,USB gamepads, USB keyboards, mice etc...

It happened again. But, this time, with the mouse connected to USB!

Could this be software-related?

There is one warning message that is repeated in the Application event viewer.

Windows saved user **-************\** registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
