this is so stupid. the 120gxp , 180gxp and 60gxp were all good drives. it was the 75gxp that had the failures (granted, i had a 15 gb 75gxp, which still runs to this day)...


back in the mid 90s maxtors were complete low budget crap. like the ecs of hard drives. now look at them.

Yes companies do recall hard drives. Fujitsu, western digital have both made hard drive recalls.

Than they also make me wait at least 6 weeks to get the drive back in. They wouldn't even accept the same packaging they send me the drive in back, they would want foam only. Hey dumbass I just sent the drive in, less than a month ago, I gave them a call and they sent me a new 40GB drive, period. I don't have to get s*** straight because I did it, not a year ago, not six months ago, I did this less than 4 weeks ago. And you call me a bitch, your the one that IBM bent over and raped for not only shipping charges, but you also had to pay for the "foam" that they kindly sent me wrapped around my new harddrive. Blah blah blah, first off you know thats not even a 75GXP that you have? Secondly, I don't care, I won't use an IBM. Third, I am a badass. I'm using a western digital. IBM SUCKS. IBM SUCKS.

I don't care how good their drives are, I'll never support them again.
 
I have many ibm hd's here, all sizes, only 1 died on me in the past 3 years and they been running 24/7 with no added cooling, i trust ibm with my data more than wd, maxtor or seagate any day.
 
wow... all the bad feelings towards ibm. i've had many ibm drives over the years and have only had a problem with the 75gxp drives. once i had a problem, ibm sent me a brand new 40gb 120gxp (my dead drive was a 20gb 75gxp!). no complaints there! i don't know what people are talking about having to pay for shipping for rma'd drives... ibm sent me the replacement drive first, with the special foam they require, and all was very simple. i had my replacement the next day! i agree that they should've publicly acknowledged the problem with the 75gxp series, but hey, companies f*ck up sometimes.
 
what are these 75gxp problems of which you all speak?

I've been running a 45gb 75gxp deskstar partitioned as my main winxp OS Boot disk and main (separately partitioned) data disk for **over 2 years** with never a hint of a problem. My computer runs 24/7 as well. I don't even bother to do backups...

hmm maybe I should. /me runs off to CUSA to get some fuji CDR's

IBM doesn't even have a 40gb 75gxp hard drive. Maybe you mean 45GB?

The problem with the 75gxp series was the "click of death". ibm supposedly used some new technology (called pixie dust i think) on the platters and if the system wasn't cooled sufficiently, there was some thermal effect on this material causing the drive to not be able to read data. this caused the drive to click since it continuosly tried to access some part of the disk unsuccessfully.
 
Newegg has the 8Mb 180GXP for $134 worth paying $20 more Frys= tax for 8 Mb and 3 year warranty you only get 1 year warranty with the 2mb. This drive beats the WD1200JB in 90% of benches so I ordered one, I will see how it compares to my JB,

I had one died after 9 months even though it was cooled directly by a 80mm fan. (SX830 case)

Had 2 IBM 60GXP 40GB HDs. Ran 24X7 United Devices & Folding@Home for almost 2 years, with no problems. Very fast - although kind of loud (not as loud as compared to a delta fan).

Now I replaced it with Seagate Barracuda IV's. Much quieter, but also much slower. Maybe I should give the 180 GXP a try...

The only failure that I had was a Maxtor back in the days. 8 GB HD.

You didn't have to replace your drives. IBM makes an acoustic utility that allows you to edit the noise your drive makes at the price of speed. I set my drive about half way between fast-loud and slow-quiet, and I can't hear it. Good thing I didn't replace it with a Seagate, even though they are nice looking.

They are indeed nice looking.

I did try the acoustic utility - which is very cool and effective by the way, to limit the access noise. But, my problem was with the idle noise (3.0 Bels), considering that the HD is in an empty Antec 1040B Server case, resonating off the case walls, in my bedroom. I run it 24X7 for Folding@home. With Seagate, now it is a manageable < 2.5 Bels. My CPU fan is the loudest part now, with 2.8 Bels, which I am trying to cut down.

Thanks for the info though...

Any idea on making a noiseless PC? I suppose the HD can never be noiseless...
 
i have had ibm drives for some time now. i own about 6 of them the oldest one for about 3 years. 2 of them did die on me but i found the rma to be fast and the wait on the phone to be short (under 3 mins). Oh by the way all my drives are oem but i had no problems with rma.
