Not necessarily.

All too often, people get caught up in wanting the item, so when you proxy bid early.. it just inflates the price even more.

Sniping in the last seconds is the only way to do it. ;)

I have been outbid with literally 1 second left. MEH!

Well if I want an item and I'll pay a maximum of $35 for it, I could care less when I put in the bid or if some lil bitch outbids me with 2 seconds to go. I'd rather do that than hit refresh 10 times a minute with a minute left
Yeah. I can see how that would be acceptable for some items, but like I said.. with some things.. like antiques, one of a kind items, or things that you really need.. it doesen't work the same way(in the minds of the bidders). If there's a possibility that you can guarentee your win, you go for it.

I usually have 2 or 3 windows open, all with incrementally higher bids.. with my password typed in. During the last 30 seconds or so, you watch.. and if anybody outbids you, just alt+tab-enter. ;)

You are not less likely to get something because you snipe it. You just plug your high bid into the sniping software a week ahead of time and it will automatically enter your high bid for you. It is no different than proxy bidding. And you don't ever have to waste time refreshing or anything.

It is different than proxy bidding though. If you enter 35$ with 7 days left to go, someone could outbid you with a minute left, and you would lose...

Like I said, it depends on the item. If it's only worth 35$ and you do not want to pay more, then that is fine. But if it's an antique, or one of a kind item, and you are willing to pay more than 35$.. there's no point in artificially inflating the price by bidding early.

Since I collect antique single cylinder air cooled small engines, I buy quite a bit of new old stock parts for them. Since they are hard to find, whatever price I pay at the end is what it is worth to me. See what I mean?

If you're willing to pay up to 195, but current high bid is 150, why put up 195 as a proxy and forget about it? That's crazy....if someone sees you as high bidder at 150, and they're willing to pay 175, then bingo: Your proxy bid just bought you something for 176 that you could've had for 150 if you just waited until the last second and sniped.

If you don't care whether you win or not, then proxy bid. Of course, if you don't care, why bid in the first place?

But if you really, really want the item, sniping is the only way to go.

I think you are confused. You still place a proxy bid when you snipe. You just place the proxy bid at the last minute. You could put $10,000 in for the snipe and if the highest bid is $200 in the last ten seconds you will snipe it for $202 or whatever. There are no cons to sniping.

Well yeah, I realize that.

I never said that there were cons to sniping though.

you are assuming that the person who wants the item for 175 didn't bid (in your sniper case). If that person did bid 175 (as you stated they would), then you would stil snipe the item at 176, not 150.
