So far, it seems like the majority of religious folks that I've come in contact with have always been forceful when it comes to religion. At times, it seems like they're worse than Democrats. 🙁

So..you're saying that you can identify all the religious people you come in contact with, whether they express their beliefs or not? 😉

I'm Roman Catholic, but I don't go 'forcing my beliefs' on others..if it comes up, I'll talk about it..but I'm not going around shoving it at people.
Sure. All I need is about 30 minutes with a person and I'll be able to sum up their situation - or background.

While I agree with you, we must remember there are many atheists who act this way as well.

ANY fanatic will act this way, no matter what their fanatical belief is. It happens in politics, too.

because oganised religion is a scam...
you either believe of you don't, in my book.
organised religion has brought about the death of more people ever, in the name of their gods, than anyone or anything ever.
here's a question for you religious people:
why is it that the churches are "non profit" yet institutions like the vatican have more money than god, yet they pass the donation tray every time you "worship"?

how many versions of the bible are there?

how can the catholics try to claim bankruptcey in the face of lawsuits, because of their negligence with their priests in light of their transgressions against what they say they are against?

and finally how can you claim there is an all knowing being that lets these charlatains and holy people do what they have done in his name?

I've found most people that pound their religion on other people aren't really living their religion in spirit.
They are, but by their own choosing. I know of an individual who is a religious fanatic when it comes to drinking or cheating on his wife. However, when it comes to using software without a legitimate license, he finds no issues with his behaviour. I guess I'm just fed up with the religious folks that are usually more hypocritical than the non-religious folks. This makes me ill. 🙁

This is similar to my beliefs. The underlying tone of religion is a possibly plausible theory, but the countless interpretations of it, accompanied by the greed of those abusing it has made it corrupt. I also don't like the fact that religion in itself has it's own bounds that can restrain or prevent you from living your life a certain way, eg. you can't marry a prodestant if you are catholic, r you children must be raised as catholic/christians/whatever. Surely this defeats the point of free will? Religion, or what it has become today, is far to hypocritical of itself, and as such, so are some of those who follow it.

As for people selling me religion, I treat them the same as phone salesman. They ring, I answer, I listen, I say no thanks, but thank you anyway. I get pissed off with their persistence too, but that is a different thing 😉

A perfect example s a girl called renee that I talk to in the US. I was telling her about my sis being ill and she said it was God testing me and explained how that works. I said I didn't believe in God and since then she has been trying to debate it out with me, with no success, but a whole lot of persistence. Every time we speak, the first question she has is "have you made a decision about christ?"

I'm much more willing to discuss the topic of faith than religion. Religion is finding answers, faith is finding peace with the questions, yet not giving up on an answer. The individual that is sure they have the path of certain eternal bliss is questionable in my philisohical, spiritual and intelectual thoguht.

Saying I don't know is the best answer, but I will trust in my image of God, is always acceptable to me. Saying "God will do this" uspurps the power of aformentioned diety and places it upon the presenter. To this I always shudder!!!!

Perhaps it is the Box they have created to put their Diety in, their perfect understanding which they want to share. Placeing God in a Box, and having all the answers denies God the power to act in God's particular way......

It's a nice thing to feel that you have made a spiritual revelation that makes sense and works. Sharing itt with others is a natural repsonse. Presenting yourself as the spokesman for that Diety is nothing short of Blasphemy in any religion or faith tradition

What I am saying is that however much you do know about God, there is far more that is uncertain and unknown. Acceoting that limited knowledge and forcasting the future actions of a DIety is simply beyond me. If we claim perfect knowldge, pride, we cease learning......

Don't you hate it when people shove religion down your throat? I'm all for being open minded and respect of other peoples opinions and beliefs, and I will sit down and listen to anyone that is willing to talk about whatever, but I hate it when people shove their religion down your throat like converting you will gain them some extra 'brownie points' in heaven or whatever they belive in. Why do they do this, why do they feel that I would be better off beliveing in there religion and that I will instantly be happier for it?

I respect their views on God, why cannot they respect mine?
You're confused and resentful. Get over it and grow up.

I really didn't read this thread (as I am still stuck in the "war"). However, it seems to me it is YOUR FAULT if you ALLOW someone to shove ANYTHING down your throat. 😛

How hard is it to firmly state: "I DON'T WISH TO DISCUSS RELIGION WITH YOU" and then WALK-AWAY if they persist. I don'[t care if it is a family member - if they are going to be RUDE, SO WILL I. 😉

Of what?

The catholic church's corruption is nothing new. Its been run like an Enron for years...centuries even. However the catholic church is only one group. There are many non-profit churches and religios organizations out there that barely make ends meet and when they don't they often go without pay until they do. I'd agree with your critisism of the Catholic church, but resent the insunuation that it represents all churches.

As for the versions of the Bible. Yes there are many. Suppose there were many versions of the Constitution. Which would be believe? We'd go back to the original and see just which one is accurate. Same is true for the versions of the Bible. Thousands of extant manuscrips exist that allow us to go back and look at just what the original Greek and Hebrew said, thus determining the accuracy of these versions.

True many organized religions are scams and do it in God's name. However God is no more to blame than you are for someone stealing your clothes and robbing banks dressed as you making people think you did it. The churches that stick to the teachings of the Bible and leave out their agenda are anything but a scam.

These days its pretty frightening what is involved in religious training. Catholic priests don't open a Bible until year 3 or 4. So its not hard to imagine many ordained ministers are never taught the truth and are pretty jaded about religion.

The difference is, atheists are not told by an authority figure to spread the word of "non-god"

"well it's simple really, god created the world in 7 days(or however long it is) and that is that."

Day: The 24-hour period during which the earth completes one rotation on its axis.

Anyone ever notice that days are completely relative? "on day one God created the heavens, the earth, and light" If the earth did not exist a day could not have passed, assuming it did pass God would have had to be on the earth to notice. A day (Being: The period during which a celestial body completes a rotation.) would almost certainly be a different amount of time to someone on another planet then ours.

God: A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe, the principal object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions.

Assuming God does exist, he/she is by definition perfect. Able to do anything. Could God create a rock so heavy that he could not lift it? If God was able to create it and not lift it, he wouldn't be perfect or all mighty as we see it, and if he couldn't create the rock?

I usually tell them I worship Satan. That pretty much takes care of the hassle to having to tell them "go fvck yourself"

the thing is that all you religiouse ppl say that those of us who don't go to church are "lost" or "confused" about the after life, and well the truth is if there is no afterlife I could give a rats ass, I will live life to the fullest ESPECIALLY "MY" sunday mornings. I would rather spend my sunday sleeping till 1:00pm than to wake up and here how I am going to hell if i don't worship "your" god the way you want me to. I will worship god the way i want to on my own time not yours you stupid ignorant close minded judgmental ASS-HOLES!!!!

period end of the muther fu*kin story.

oh and another thing if i want to sware I will so Fu*k You

Here's my beef with these people - if they really want to be doing God's work, why aren't they working to convert or improve criminals, and the like? Why is it that usually these fanatics pick upstanding, law-abiding people to try to force their ideology on? If these nutjobs really think they are needed, there's much more worthwhile work they could be doing.

Its a moot question. It assumes 2 ideas not capable of esisting in the same reality. The immovable object vs. the irrestable force. We can concieve the two in our minds. However they cannont exist in the same reality. One would cancel the other out. The question is illogical.

As for evangelizing prisoners and the like....yes people do this. However not everyone is gifted in that area. The goal is to reach everyone in spite of their standing in man's eyes. After all in God's eyes someone who fibbed in 4th grade is not better than Hitler, Dalmer, or Manson. The slightest sin makes you just as in need of forgiveness. There are not scales that God weighs your good vs your bad and decides which you did more of.
