Mike Portnoy, the drummer from Dream Theater, put together a Rush tribute called 'Working Man', in which many superstar, virtuoso musicians teamed up to redo a dozen or so Rush songs, mostly playing them note for note.

I'm a huge Rush fan, but I have at admit, most of these redo's are sharper, cleaner, and just overall better sounding than Rush's originals.

 Props to fellow rush fans in the house! I've been into them for like 10 years, still my favorite band. What is amazing if I've given up trying to convert people to Rush then my g/f comes along, I don't push her into them, just casually introduce, and she loves them. She puts them on in the car to rock out. Oh yeah so she decided to get the license plate "BY TOR" so I was glad to get "SNOWDOG"

I have to disagree with liking those covers though. I love dream theater and most of their stuff, but they are too sterile. They cleaned out what little grit and soul the Rush songs had to begin with. My main complain about dream theater is being too technical sounding.

So for my covers -

Joe Cocker - with a little help from my friends (way better than the Beatles)

Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road (no idea who did the original)

edit more:
Marylin Manson - I put a spell on you (?)

Rammstein - Stripped (depeche mode cover)

David Bowie - Friday on my Mind (?)

And freaking awesome:
System of a Down - Snowblind (black sabbath cover?)

I used to have an awesome cover of Enjoy the Silence, but I can't remember what band it was. I'm gonna have to look that up sometime.

Johnny Cash - Hurt

/thread

NIN - Hurt (live) > JC - Hurt > NIN - Hurt (studio)

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that. Trent's a good singer but Cash has the deep, sad voice that song needs. After I heard his cover I can hardly listen to any NIN version.

Also:

Black Magic Woman - Santana
Landslide - Dixie Chicks
Nothing Compares to You - Sinead O'Connor (even if she's bonkers)
Higher Ground - RHCP
Signs - Tesla
Respect - Aretha Franklin
Knocking on Heaven's Door - GnR

Edit: added GnR

Also, The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
Not sure how that counts since it's a traditional song, but they put down the definitive version.

Aretha Franklin doing Otis Redding's "Respect" is the best example I can think of. Even the great Otis agreed.

Yeah, I didn't even know it was a cover for a long time.

Agree to disagree. I like them both differently :)

well, so is Whisky in the Jar, and some people were giving Metallica's version as an example. so traditional songs are ok.

Yeah, the NIN version is much more interesting musically.

This reminded me:

Here is the worst cover ever. If you have never heard this song before, still view the two, but listen to original fully then you will be shocked at the cover version.

Original: Still Fly - Big Tymers

Cover: Still Fly - Devil Wears Prada

Even of those of you that don't like hiphop, you cannot deny that the cover is terrible. I don't listen to rap anymore, but the original is not too bad.

I haven't listened to it, but there's no way it's worse than Korn's attempt at Another Brick in the Wall.

Oh it's right up near there. I'll put it this way. Rap -> emo = epic fail.
