Which one in your opinion will work better as an office rig. Multitasking is the main purpose of this rig. This is for my GF so I wont be overclocking it.

Dothan 2.8 GHz
Sempron 2800+
Barton 2500+

go with the barton 2500+ and oc it to 3200+ by simply raising the fsb to 200mhz. 🙂 now that's ur best bang for the buck.

lol, there are no 2.8ghz dothans. they currently only go up to 2.0ghz (last i remember checking, which wasnt very long ago). anyways, i'm not sure if intel's made a desktop chipset to support the dothan yet. currently, that i know of, it's only for notebooks, but i may be wrong.

a large pipeline doesnt have anything to do wtih how well it multi-tasks. hyperthreading is what's important and it's the key for better multi-tasking on cpu architectures wtih longer pipelines. obviously, longer pipelines need higher frequencies to match speeds with a cpu with shorter pipelines and with lower frequencies (if you know your physics). as for cache, anything higher then 512k or 256k has VERY minimal affects on multi-tasking. with the cpu's you listed, i recommend you stick wtih pure speed on this, so i say go for the sempron. it should perfom a little bit better hten the barton on stock speeds. i hope this helps. 🙂
 
Oh in the case that you meant 2.8C, then I'd say get that or the 2500+ barton (to save money). 2.8c will probably perform best of what you listed, but is overpriced if you aren't overclocking imho.

If you meant 2.8e or 2.8a I'd say go 2500+ again. Prescotts don't perform up to snuff with northwoods in most apps and are just all around poorly designed and implimented processors.

If you meant 2.8 celeron, I'd slap you around a little for even having to ask, then say go 2500+ again.
 
This is a budjet machine for office work, the celeron DOTHAN is not that bad at all. 256K L2, 533 MHz FSB. The Dothan is 10 times better then the Celeron Northwood. Slap yourself around.

The E was a utter dissapointment, I totally agree with you on that but its to the point where the E is pumping enough frequency to take advantage of its GIANT 31 stage pipeline so its not such a big deal. If my GF had the money, I would build her an Athlon 64 rig but this is not the case. I checked newegg for the 2500+ and I can only find it as OEM. I need the stock HSF and thermal pad.

celeron D is still crap next to any other processor than other celerons. It's around $110 @ newegg. You can get a sempron 3100+ retail for ~$125 It's worth the extra $15. Or else get a barton 2600+ for $110.

Celeron-M is 512k L2 cache, 400MHz FSB for both Banias and Dothan versions.
Dothan also tops out at 2.1 GHz or so with 2MB L2 cache and, last I checked, no 533MHz FSB. Banias tops out at 1.7 GHz also with 400MHz FSB.
About the closest chip I can think of that matches your numbers is the Celeron D, based off the Prescott core.

You should slap yourself. Celeron "D" is not Celeron "Dothan". It's Prescott. Celeron-M is Dothan based, as far as I know of, and it's definately not for a budget machine for sure.
Many people even say Northwood Celeron was better, BTW. Only one advantage of Celeron D is that it OC extremely well, but that's it. And since you said you will not OC, that's not advantage at all I guess.
 
i hate these posts. just check all their prices, and look for benchmarks and deside for yourself. your going to get nothing but fanboys and flaming in here.

The processor I am looking at is the Celeron D 2.66. I can get a 865 Chipset mobo for $50, I can not find a Nforce 2 mobo for under $80 and the Barton on Newegg is OEM and is $95. This adds up to be a lot more then the Celery setup.

Out of those chips there are problems/conflicts.

The Pentium-M is pretty expensive and have no chipsets out to date that you can buy. It has to come in a laptop and you would have to rip the M/B and what not out of the laptop to use it.

The 2500+ well you need to OC to really unlock its potential. Therefore you would need a AthlonXP-M 2400+ Barton. Also you would have to OC it to around 3200+ speeds for it to be really good.

For the Sempron, you might as well get a A64 newcastle (Sck754) it will be much faster. The Sck A semprons get beat by the Bartons even before OCing.

If you are doing office things you are not TRULEY multitasking. When we say multi tasking we mean running like a game with webbrowser open and what not. Running a couple of MS Words at the same time will hardly stress your system.

If you aren't OCing i would go for a NewCastle A64 (2800+ or something). If you are OCing than go for the XP-M. If you have some funds to burn and are doing true multitasking than the P4 Northwoods are very good chips. Overall i would pick the A64 though.

Hi, I actually just built a computer for my girlfriend as well 😉. I spent a long time researching, since she too doesnt have alot of money, and this is what I came up with for her system:

CPU: AMD 64 3000+ :
MB: Gigabyte K8VT800
RAM: 512 3200 Kingston ValueRam
HD: 120 GB Seagate Barracuda SATA
DVD/CD: Pioneer Dual Layer DVL-108 (16x +- SL, 4xDL)
Video Card: I supplied my own, but you can get any regular one for 50 bucks
Case:Regular ol case for 50 bucks
work+warranty: 40bucks
----------------------------------------------
TOTAL: 732 CAN = 600 US


Here are the reasons iv decided to go for the 64 (754) platform:
- The AMD 64's are by far the best all around processors. The one KEY deciding factor for choosing the AMD 64 was that it is 64 bit. This is often overlooked, but this makes the system completely futureproof for winxp64, longhorn, etc. Most people dont get new computers every year or 2, so its important to have something that is compatible with future technology. That was the single most important reason for choosing that platform over the XP's per say, but also there are other reasons such as:
-the 64 hammer cores run alot cooler, and consume less wattage, ie less maintenance, less noise
-no need to overclock here, cpu is already very fast
-free speed boost when 64 bit os comes out , and even more free speed boosts when 64 bit apps for it come out. This should be within at most a year.
-integrated memory controller makes for quick loading in all applications(winxp installed in under 20 min)
-the 64 prices just dropped, this cpu can now be picked up for 160 bucks
-Similarly Priced processors are much slower (ie the xp3000+)
-Hyperthreading work, but it is overhyped. It will speed up multitasking, but I would say better to pick up something that is faster overall, than something slower with hyperthreading. Realisticaly, in most applications you wont notice any difference.

-If you really do not want to go for the 64's I would recommend the Intel Dothan's for their low power, plus they dont have that ridicoulous 20 stage pipeline
