At current prices, none of the 770 cards makes any sense. If you are spending $400, an after-market (Sapphire, PowerColor PCS+, XFX Double Dissipation, MSI Gaming) R9 290 4GB is by far the better choice. R9 290 handily beats a 770 in games and after-market versions are much closer to 780 Ghz editions / and are nipping on the heels of a 780Ti reference card.

Buying a 770 4GB is simply a waste of money when after-market R9 290s are $400. If you want to go NV only, spend a little extra for the 780.

I agree about spending the xtra $$$ for the 780. you wont regret it.

Well it depends, if both games are any indication of future vram requirements then 3gb is not enough and I would recommend ones with 4gb or more just to stay on the safe side.

thats exactly why i decided recently to order a gtx 780 6gb version for $40 more than a 3gb one.

seems like a very small premium for 3gbs more and well worth it.

yeah i agree and am a little upset that evga did not offer these earlier for those that went and bought a 780 a ways back.
I kind of got lucky and just settled for a 760 the last two years and now i am glad i waited, of course the 800 series will probably make me say "Why didnt a wait some more!" It never ends! LOL!

I swapped my 780 for a 290x... game runs great now no stuttering at 3440x1440 with everything set to Ultra.

Hard to justify a $180 premium for the 6GB 780 when 290x cards are going for $400. I'll be upgrading again when new cards come out anyway as I need a GPU with HDMI 2.0 for my 4K TV, so no point getting 6GB unless it'll be used now.

Fair point but isn't it better to go cf with 4k for a much better gaming experience? Seems like a waste when most settings needs to be toned down just to say "hey I'm playing in 4k" with a less than optimal experience.

was that due to the 3gb of vram in the 780 compared to the 4gb in the 290?

Yes.

CF wouldn't do much for me, I'm limited to 30 Hz on my 4K TV right now since current GPUs don't support HDMI 2.0. I'm playing this on the LG 34UM95 right now though, single 290X gets me 45-50 FPS. So there would be a benefit there, but I don't want to drop the cash for a multi GPU setup until cards that support HDMI 2.0 are out.

But we're not talking sli with GK104. Honestly I thought most everybody that wanted to sli grabbed the 4gb GK104.

Regarding the GTX 780ti it is one the most Vram starved cards I've ever seen. With it having roughly the performance of 2x gk104 and yet just 3gb. At least Gk104 is reaching the end of its performance life for high end gaming. on the other hand, the ti still has a lot of muscle but was crippled right out of the gate with the low Vram.

You have enough vram, or you don't. The 780Ti isn't 2x as fast as the GK104, obviously it depends on the resolution, but I'd say it is closer to 50% faster with 50% more memory (sometimes more than 50% faster, sometimes less). If the GTX780 doesn't have enough vram for how much horsepower it has, than I can't see how the GK104 with 2GB is any different.

Like I said in the 'is 2GB enough for 1440P' thread, getting a GTX770 level card with 2GB limits you.

I thought I was future-proof with 4GB.

8xMSAA is a no go with 4GB @1080p, and 4GB VRAM is just adequate for 4xMSAA + Ultra

I do think this game is an aberration of sort, but it IS indicative of things to come

If GTX880/870 comes out with 4gb of ram, I won't even be comfortable with that since this game busts right through 3gb already. I'd rather see 6gb as standard for the next round of cards. I'm willing to bet they are 4gb though and people end up screwed again pretty soon.

I agree. That said, if they skimp on VRAM again, I'm hoping there is at least the option for more without resorting to a ludicrously expensive model like the Titan. I would've gladly paid an extra $50 or so for more VRAM in the 780 when I first bought it, but such a configuration didn't exist then.

Anybody got any multi GPU feedback for this game? More I play it the more I like it.

But,.. it needs to be at 60fps, particularly for driving.

One more performance tip from me for NVidia owners. If you have shader cache enabled, try disabling it. For me, this resulted in smoother gaming.

I think the shader cache helps more if you have an older or weaker CPU. But if you have a Core i7, then it might be best to disable it.

I feel for ya and ALMOST made the mistake of getting a 3gb version cause it was a FTW edition.
turns out that i will be much better off with the 780 superclocked 6GB version for only $40 more.
Luckily for me i had posted this question here before ordering but in your case evga did not offer them yet. I love evga gpu's but sometimes really they make me wonder as a company?o_O
I think of all the pissed off 780 owners out there since the 6gb versions came out.

I'm not sure if the game is not optimizes or just that demanding. I do know that it stutters badly at 1440p on HIGH with my 780 ti. Not looking good for 3gb cards. I was thinking of adding another 780 ti in the near future. I don't think I will do that now. Bummer. I think the 290/x are the better options with this game or any gpu with atleast 4GB.

Well 4xMSAA is pretty much required for high-quality gaming, but 8xMSAA? It's more of a luxury. All the post AA methods implemented in games so far are just a poor man's alternative due to the blurriness they inflict on the overall scene. Why render everything in crisp ultra texture detail to then post filter it to look like consoles?

If evga did not offer a 6Gb version of the 780 i would totally agree about the 290's but since they do offer a regular and overclocked version i bought the 780 sc.
the 290's have to bad a rep for me,so many i read about complained about heat issues or driver probs? AMD does not really update drivers like Nvidia does.
plus isnt a super clocked 780 pretty much the better/faster card especially with the extra 2g's of vram?

The Temporal SMAA used in this game is pretty fantastic and better than the 4xMSAA.

Yet another game with the drive to have good graphics ruined by maintaining backwards compatibility with 360 and PS3. Who cares about super hi-res textures and a million different post-processing shader effects when the buildings are made of 5 polygons?

I am just wondering how far this will go?
When i seen this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njfj6KwEAfg
i was like how much better can PC graphics get?
I think that looks amazing for a game!!o_O
