"I was a voice for hire, and a misinformed one," says Kate Mulgrew, famous as Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway. Mulgrew narrates an upcoming documentary that argues that Earth is the center of the universe and the sun rotates around it

One would think that actress Kate Mulgrew knows a lot about the universe from her time as a Starfleet ship captain in the science-fiction series Star Trek: Voyager.

But her “expertise” (and, perhaps, sanity?) was thrown into question when her voice was heard narrating a trailer for The Principle, an upcoming documentary that argues for geocentricism, the belief that the sun (as well as the rest of the universe) revolves around Earth.

On Tuesday, the actress took to Facebook to offer an explanation on how she became involved in the film: essentially, she was duped.

In the trailer, Mulgrew tells audiences, “Everything we think we know about our universe is wrong.” Ironically, it now seems she feels every thing she says in the film is wrong.

Mulgrew is not the first person to express regret for involvement in the film. Physicist Lawrence Krauss, who is also featured in the docu, said in an article for Slate that the film took statements he made out of context.

The Principle, which is due out later this year, is directed by Katheryne Thomas and produced by Robert Sungenis, who questions the Holocaust in addition to the order of the universe.

So . . . when hired for a narration role, does one just mentally shutdown and not think about the words coming out of their mouth at all?

It depends. One person said they were taken out of context. Mulgrew could have had varying sessions that were then pieced together to be entirely different than what she thought she was recording :O

Pretty clever move by the director, or whoever made the decision, if that is the case. Or maybe she just needed some cash. Only time will tell, but Mulgrew doesn't seem stupid enough to be a geocentrist

Kind of.

If you listen to commentaries for say, futurama for example: 9 times out of 10 voice actors have no context for what they are saying, and usually no clue what its even about.

They have to see a finished product before they understand it at all.

Besides that, she was probably used to talking complete BS from her time on Voyager. I love Star Trek, it is not hard scifi at all. Most of their technical problems are solved by reversing the polarity or verterons.

I think its hardly news that celebs and jobbing actors will mouth any old rubbish without noticing or caring what they are saying, as long as there's a paycheck in it or some publicity.

(Chris Morris built much of his career out of that fact, cf "Brass Eye")

At least this was just stupid, rather than offensive. It wasn't Holocaust denial or something.

Yea its totally possible to dupe someone with voice acting. Slip in sentences here or there into what seems like perfectly reasonable dialogue and cut them out of context. Super easy.

Her one line was "Everything we know about the universe isn't true"

Heck, the movie could have been about anything. A spoof, or a fantasy, etc.

How is this even anything?

It wouldn't be uncommon for the script writers to have her say a lot more than what actually went into the movie, and if you're adding in stuff it's easy to twist the narrative so that it fits whatever point of view you're trying to achieve.

Similar kinds of things happened with the Dispelled movie when it came out.

Too many people with no hobbies busy telling the rest of us how to think.

Was she pissed she didn't hit on her too

Possibly since her fav ST series was Voyager. g/f kept saying how old and wrinkled it would be if I ever wanted to tap it, and I told to stop b/c that's gross (I don't want to think about Kate's old poon!). But seriously sweet lady, nice eyes too. :)

i don't think that was her only line. anyway, with good enough editing you can paint any picture you like from any material.

"Everything we know about the universe isn't true"

if neil degrasse tyson said that, and i think he has, i would agree completely - not because of who said it, but the context.

I believe it goes something like this:

"Bateluer... here's a check with several zeroes on it. We'd like you to read some lines for an upcoming documentary for us."

You might casually ask what the documentary is about, you know, just to check with your moral compass and all that at this point...

"What was that? You want another zero on the check? Done."

Earth is the center of the universe though. We've known this for thousands of years. Don't see what all the hub bub is about.

People seriously believe the Sun revolves around the Earth?

Apparently 1 in 4 Americans according to the National Science foundation.

This is why I keep saying the education system in North America (Canada too) is fundamentally broken. It's not a funding issue either, but rather how kids are being taught. No wonder half of them graduate high school without a grasp of basic math, science, and literacy.

Um, further down the page it says that a third of EU residents got it wrong. No region has a monopoly on stupid, it's a basic element of the human condition.

Of course, that doesn't mean our education system isn't also fucked.

I'd like to think that at least half of that percentage is well-educated smart asses trying to skew poll results for laughs.
