I think, and repeat, THINK what happed was that the snow boiled into steam under the snow and the steam pressure caused that to explode. Horrible that people got killed from that, but the sheer power of that is just staggering.

I've climbed Etna a few times, it's just outside of Catania, Sicily, Italy. It's currently Europe's most active volcano. It's pretty difficult, and lots of trails are the top to sight see. Up top its nothing but small black rock, hard to get reaction. I think I posted a few pics in the picture thread here. It's pretty eery though on the drive to the base, the evidence of major eruptions and leftover melted rock houses, magma left over, etc. Even in towns an hour away there are ruins, roped off in the middle of town for a reminder and tourism. Couldn't imagine seeing that.

Still, it's beautiful to see erupt at night. Saw at least a dozen times, pretty close up.
