MSN Messenger - how to make it EXIT instead of hiding in the stinking sys tray?

I hate this thing. When I am done with it and hit Close, it hides in the system tray. The older versions would completely exit, but this darn thing wants to hang around. To fully exit you then have to right click on the system tray icon and choose exit. Jesus, why can't they let us just exit the fool thing normally?

Anyone know how to get around this annoyance?

Thanks Amused, but that's for older versions of Messenger. I'm sorry I forgot to mention I was using the new MSN Messenger v 6 which doesn't have that option. They took it out!

At least you gave a nice reply and was trying to be helpful. Thanks.

you can uninstall it
search for uninstall windows messenger in google.
i have it uninstalled and installed msn messenger 6.0 instead. you can exit out of that one thru right clicking
i hated that about windows messenger as well, it wouldnt go away.

Go to windows messenger directory and delete the msm.exe file 😉 Kill it once and for all!!!!

this should be interesting. i know that various MSN Messengers have been set up so that they COULDN'T be closed if IE or OE was open. i currently have v 4.7 of Windows messenger and it DOES allow me to close. i'm not sure which is which tho.

Try shutting the hell up and learning how to use the program, asspirate. Is two extra clicks too much to ask, or is your Wank Hand auto-geared to "Right-Click, Save Picture As"?

AH! Yes, you are correct, sir!

its sort of stupid

windows messenger is the one that comes preloaded with XP...the one i could never get to leave the system tray.
i would right click exit and it says there are still programs using it.

msn messenger 6.0 is the one you have to actually download and i have been able to get that one to exit and leave the system tray.

Didn't Windows XP come out 2 years ago?? I thought this problem was solved by January 2002, and if not then SP1 took care of it???

weirder is, I have Windows Messenger 4.7 installed RIGHT now and i just did the Right Click exit thing WITH Outlook Express up and running, whereas FriedPie can't get MSN Messenger 6.0 to close.

How? When I do that I get a message that says:
"There are other applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these other applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These application may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet Explorer."

The messenger programs are the hardest to close. For that reason I never have MSN Messenger installed. And Windows Messenger I do what Amused said and close it that way.
