weirder is, I have Windows Messenger 4.7 installed RIGHT now and i just did the Right Click exit thing WITH Outlook Express up and running, whereas FriedPie can't get MSN Messenger 6.0 to close.
How? When I do that I get a message that says:
"There are other applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these other applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These application may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet Explorer."

The messenger programs are the hardest to close. For that reason I never have MSN Messenger installed. And Windows Messenger I do what Amused said and close it that way.

Easy fix for that:

If you are running Outlook Express or MSN and that is what is causing your problem, this will solve it:

1. Load Regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Outlook Express
3. Make there a new DWORD and name it Hide Messenger
4. Make the Value 2

You will see that Windows Messenger will not come up and can be closed when you start or run MSN and/or Outlook Express.

Oh the irony! That's how I've always closed messenger, right click on systray icon -> exit. That's how you close lot's of programs. Mozilla quick start, AVG Antivirus...

Go to START, click RUN then paste this into the box:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Click OK.

Restart if told to do so.

Cheers!

Why if he wants to still use Messenger???

My way is better:

Most people don't use this pest and if they come here asking may not be comfortable editing the registry!

May I suggest trying out XP Lite. The easy way to trim MS' Pork from Windows! :)

Cheers!

if you click on the links you will see there is a MSN Messenger version 6.1 now and a WIndows messenger vs 5.1.

friedpie, uninstall MSN messenger and install Windows Messenger.

Thanks. I did just that. Prefer Windows Messenger 5 over MSN Messenger 6.

At least WM 5 will exit completely when closed.

And remember to try my registry hack to make it not open automatically when you open outlook/express or MSN.

i know how to get a simple program to do what i want. you come in here asking moronic questions. the idiot here is YOU. hahaha.

Tell us, do you have MSN Messenger 6? If you can get it to close without having to right click on the system tray, then prove it. Make a video of it or something because it can't be done.

You apparently don't know the difference between MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, and you couldn't comprehend what I originally wrote. I said I wanted to avoid the right click, exit procedure. I wanted the program to completely exit when I hit close. Your response was "right click, exit." That made no sense whatsoever.

Who's your daddy.

Messenger is a very popular IM program. "Most" is not an accurate statement.

Here's the scenario: You're chatting with someone in Messenger. The program is OPEN and you are USING it. When you are finished you hit File, Close. Instead of closing it hides itself in the sytem tray sitting there. That's not closed. That's running in the background.

No, seriously. Why is it such a Nuisance, Annoyance, and/or Great Injustice To You to make two extra clicks?

How about instead of hitting File-Close, you hit Right-Click, Exit?

i'm not sure that some of you get it yet. Msn Messenger 6 cannot be closed with just a right click exit. amused gave us a nice reg hack to help but it still doesn't close the program.

/goes to sister's computer

/right-clicks MSN 6, exits

And I know she hasn't done any reghacking ... I mean, she uses MSN 6. :p

fine, did you read the whole thread? i deleted msn messenger because it wouldn't do it. there is more to the question than meets the eye. just because your experience is such does not mean that MS is so consistent that EVERYONES will be.

i've had MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, some installs allow it to work and some don't. i haven't bothered to figure out why because it isn't important to me, but it is so.

btw M4H, if you are able to explain EVERY anomaly found in MS OS's and Software, than More power to you, me i just give people the benefit of the doubt and accept the possibility that they are experiencing an anomaly i haven't. more times than not, i'm right.

I think its just when you have OE running with MSN you can't rightclick>exit. But if you have MSN running on its own then it shouldn't be a problem, I used that register hack a good while ago because I used to run OE. But I think there is something in tools > options where you can choose not to run MSN with OE.

But really... I don't think right-click then exit is such a big deal. And besides, its not as if its "hiding" its in full view in your systray.

Here's the scenario: You're chatting with someone in Messenger. The program is OPEN and you are USING it. When you are finished you hit File, Close. Instead of closing it hides itself in the sytem tray sitting there. That's not closed. That's running in the background.
Here's the scenario: You're typing something in MSWord AnyVersion. The program is OPEN and you are USING it. When you are finished with your document, you hit File, Close.

Did Word exit? Nope, it's still running. Try this with Excel, Frontpage, or even hundreds of other apps written by entirely different software companies, you'll see the same behavior all over the place.

Close=close. Exit=exit.

Yes, WinMsgr allows the option to completely exit when closing the main UI, and MsnMsgr never has had this option. In both apps, the design was to allow closing the main UI without "accidentally" logging off the service. Why? Because some people would get annoyed when a buddy exits (and thus logs off), and when the buddy realizes he/she made a mistake and didn't want to log off, he/she would log back on again, and all of the buddies in his/her list would get an alert that he/she has just logged on again.
