Okay. I am not sure why my PQI memory (DDR3200) is showing to be running at 333 MHz (on the splash screen), but I decided to take advantage of the underclock. I raised the FSB to 240 MHz, so now my CPU is running at 2160 MHz (as opposed to 1800 MHz stock) and my memory is now running at 400 MHz. CPU temp is 29C.

Good???? Is there something I am missing? Do I run the risk of damaging anything on the motherboard if I just keep these settings?

From the web:

" For best performance, you should be running at your board's maximum available HyperTransport speed. The basic formula is:
HTT (FSB) X HT multiplier (often called LDT in BIOS) = HyperTransport speed. The multiplier is often listed as a frequency. 1000MHz = 5x, 800MHz = 4x, etc.
If your board's maximum HT speed is 1000MHz and you have HTT at 250, then the multiplier should be set to 4x. 250 X 4 = 1000. "

This board is stock at 1000MHz. Might not be stable at higher speeds.

Do you have CPU-Z installed?

Okay. I dropped the HT Frequency down to 4x (240 x 4 = 960 MHz). Like I said in my previous post, CPU-Z is not working for me. It may be because I am running Win2K.

Odd about the ram. Should be set automatically at 200MHz in the bios. But with an overclock, dividers are usually used in the bios to lower ram speed, unless your ram can take it.

Yes. It is very strange. Like I said before, the Cell Menu, it says my DDR Clock is at 167 MHz. The DRAM Configuration Menu says the Memclock index value is 200 MHz. I am not sure where the problem is. Thanks for your help though.

I just bumped the FSB to 250 MHz. That should give me an even 1000 MHz on the Hypertransport. It also gives me 2.25 GHz on the CPU and 418 MHz on the memory. I am now running Prime95 to test for stability.

Flashed like a champ and the settings re-appeared. 🙂 This BIOS is identical to the v.1D.

You can get the W7125NCG.1C0 here. It's an ISO, so download and burn to CD, boot it up and choose the 1C BIOS option.

Good Luck 😀

For anyone who wants to push their system, the W7125NCG.1C0 bio above allows the adjustment of Vcore to greater than 10% over the default. Also it allows for memory voltage bump to greater than 10% as well.
I have been running the my SD 4000+ at 3Ghz, 1.47V (default 1.35V), prime95 stable for 27 hours. The HTT is set at 250x4=1Ghz. The 2x1GB Patriot low latency is running at 200Mhz, 2-3-2-5/1T.
Originally it failed the prime95 after about 2+ hours when setting vcore to 1.43.

rmrfhomeoops: very nice!

Rockhound1 - you are probably set up nicely at this point for a medium OC'd rig. 250 HTT is nice, although it can go higher if you're willing to really play and tweak. 🙂

Hey All... I haven't built a system since my last MSI NEO2 w/ a 3000+ so please excuse the newb question. What's the hottest CPU I can put in this? I see another thread about a 4400+ but the specs say only up to 4000+.

Also, I never tried over clocking but after reading this thread I went into the MSI utility CoreCenter and let it try to OC itself and it BSOD'd on me. Should I just not bother? I'm not a gamer but I am a geek 🙂

TIA

Thanks Lurker1. I am running Prime95 on it just to make sure it is stable. The CPU runs amazingly cool and could probably go higher, but I will be satisfied with this overclock if everything remains stable. I still can't figure out why the board was clocking my memory at 333 MHz instead of 400 MHz. Strange.

This should answer your question.

I'm going to assume you mean the X2 4400+. You would be looking at dual core @ 2.2 GHz versus single core @ 2.4 GHz. Both would have 1 MB L2 cache (per core).

However, if you are talking about the single core 4400+, I'd go with the Opteron.

The only prices I see from da egg are Operton 150 boxed (S939) for $140 and X2 4400+ OEM (S939) for $180. I also assume you want these for the MB in this post.

This should help answer your question.

Shoot. The memory I am looking at is not listed on that pdf. I am looking at is this G.skill stuff here

I've had several MSI boards. I've run with Kingston, Corsair, Micron, and even a few off brand chips. I've never had a problem with any of them. I don't think you will have anything to worry about.

The only problem with cheaper memory is that your stable timings might (or might not) be significantly lower. In my case I'm running with Patriot RAM that was relatively inexpensive yet it seems to do quite well in timings.

Speaking of memory, I just ran memtest86+ for 9 hours with no errors. Two 1GB sticks of Corsair TwinX rated at 3-3-3-8 and 2.7V. The nice thing is that I tested them at 2.5-3-3-8 and they still passed fine.

Other than the fluctuations in Vcore, I can't find anything to complain about with this board, and there is much to like. When my Asus comes back from RMA, I think I'll just sell it and keep this board.

It didn't like my pairing of Ultra 1GB and Ultra 512MB sticks. Had lots of application errors when both were in so I'm now running with only the 1GB.

I have two of these boards in use, and have generic memory in one of them and it runs just fine....
