MS updates will not install.

Computer is XP, SP3, all prior updates. As of about 3 weeks ago, MS updates will not install. They download properly, but I get the message that updates were not installed. tried numerous times. Computer works perfectly aside from that. I've done rootkit scans, Avast antivirus scans, Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes. Found and deleted some "PUP" entries. No difference.

Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

XP is still supported. I also have W7 on the same machine. Active X installed and enabled.Updates for myW7 work fine.

Just started having issues with this over the weekend. Rolling back a laptop that runs a bit too slow on Vista. Used to be I could install SP3, IE8, and .net framework, and it would work fine. On this latest one, actively searching for updates results in nothing for hours. Then, out of nowhere, it just started the background update on its own, and installed them. Then if failed on all updates after that (it found them, but would fail to install them). The Fixit tool didn't "fix it" either. On a previous attempt (install), it froze on the Genuine advantage tool, so I couldn't get anything updated on that one.

I don't know, I may just give up and go back to Vista. It will be on the net, so I don't like all those security updates not being there.

This usually works for me:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555989

When it says to rename folders, don't bother, just delete them, xp recreates them. And add to the list the file "wups2.dll". If it says a message that basically means one of those files is not found (I've seen it be wups2.dll a few times), grab a copy of that file from another xp machine and restart the process.

Not sure what it is, but every reinstall of xp causes windows update & svchost.exe to eat up the cpu until some of the updates get installed. Usually runs for about two hours before it even recognizes and begins downloading the updates. Bu at least when they are done updating, svchost.exe no longer eats up the whole cpu.

To speed up Vista, try editing the settings for Windows Update and turn off "Microsoft Update", this helps Vista a lot on older hardware.

How do I create a batch file? Forgot to mention I've gone tne msfixit route as well.

I have seen this before in Vista and one fix was to set the time to internet time. I can't recall where I read about this but it worked for me. Good Luck.

Yup. On a single-core P4 without hyperthreading, it basically just spins its wheels nearly forever. On a dual-core, I could see it making some progress.

I will not judge an individual or a business who wants to go on running XP. Cause there are many reasons.

But, open and shut, XP was never as secure as 7....not even close. And, past next April, when MS stops writing patches for XP, it will be TRULY & increasingly UNSAFE to run it at all.

Humans with no lives who are moved to such stuff, will be able to hack/infiltrate it with impunity.

Thank you for not judging. There are legitimate reasons to run XP. I have W7 on the same computer, and will be using XP less and less as time goes by.

Just to update, I found a workaround that seems to be working for now. After I installed the drivers, SP3, and IE8, I started browsing the web, and Windows decided it wanted to install updates in the background. After a couple sessions of that, the Windows Update site finally started responding. After everything was up to date, I let the Genuine Advantage app run and it finally completed.

This made me feel warm. But that anyone should have to thank anyone for being normal and seeing things in perspective and not being a toxic bigot.....makes me very sad.

FIXED...Tried over a dozen fixes that did not work. Checked services.msc and found that BITS is not there. Not even listed. Then found

http://www.philmorgan.net/techie-to...ransfer-service-fix-batch-file-for-windows-xp

That worked in restoring BITS back into services. It was shown as "automatic", but was stopped. Tried to start it, but it wouldn't. Got error message 1290:0x50 . Found several fixes for this error, but none worked.

Tried Combofix. Problem solved. What the hell happened?

I didn't look. I forget how to view it. I'll give it a try. Your awesome link was...awesome!!!. Very cool.

Infinite applause and fist bumkps for having hung in and found the solution!

Unless I am wrong, I know about it, but never needed it, If Combofix worked....I guess it means you were infected!🙁 I doubt I would ever have even considered that!

CONGRATS!!!!!!
