mp3s playing too fast?

I got this question in an email today from a friend.

I have a new system at home. It's a Compaq Deskpro EN P933 with 128MB RAM. I am running Windows 2000 Professional on it, not server.

I have some CD's of MP3's I like to play. But on this new system they play too fast and sound like the chipmunks. WAV, ASX, and other files play just fine...but MP3's are not doing so well.

I have tried Winamp, and MS Media Player 7.1 and Media Player 6.x with the saem results. I have tried copying the files to the local HD and playing them from there, still no difference.

Do you have any ideas?

I have never heard of this, has anyone else?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Just curious as I don't know how to fix your problem, but I have heard of problems with mp3 that were encoded at less than 112kbs. You might try converting them to 128kbs. I don't know how so don't ask me how, still kinda new to mp3 conversion. I just started using EAC with the external lame encoder and most of the settings are still a mystery to me. It makes great mp3's though. All I use to use was Media Player, but decided if I am going to do this I should make them playable in a external player and I was happy I did. They have so much more clarity encoded as mp3's versus the wma from media player.

Good luck figuring it out though.

hehehe. I have about 100 of these at work. MP3s play slow? must be compaq! hehehe. Go to their website and get the latest drivers. Its about 25 megs large. its the only way to fix it. Trust me.

Thanks for the replies

friend tried the Compaq download and they still play too fast

playing them from the CD on any other machine works fine

copying them to the harddrive does not help

he has emailed Compaq too

he may have to install the drivers a couple of times. I had to do that several times before it worked. Try removing the drivers and then reinstalling them.
