Not quite. I paid 180 dollars on my 10 gig ipod from Target when they were clearancing them out last year.

Really, why another Ipod? I don't understand. Have you not been reading all the comments/reviews in every Ipod thread here. There are BETTER options than the IPod's. I thought we here at AT were all into making GOOD sound decisions based on reviews, and other user experiences. And NOT fall for this "hip", pop culture marketing.

Damn.

GOD-DAMNED-FUCKING-AGREED!

256MBs is enough for me, I hardly ever listen to more than 30 songs in rotation during any given month. And it only takes 2 minutes to swap out songs. I can let that thing fly all around my car and shove it anywere and not have to worry about HD crashes.

What unit do you have, Travis? Would you buy it again, or a different brand or model? If it doesn't cost too much, I may buy a few for Xmas! :p

iRock! 830. I bought 2, and I keep the other one at work at all times, my coworkers have NO TASTE in music (Christian rock).

It takes only ONE AA battery, and each battery lasts me about a month

Sound quality is purely awesome. I have some of those binaural recordings on my personal one, there was a thread about them a while back. I can put the earbuds in and play the Fireworks recording and feel like I'm watching a fireworks display amongst a crowd of different people. It's nuts how real it sounds, and the match box recording makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up :Q

I remember when one of our 40 gig display models went missing (warehouse dude at CC). It was huge, we launced a massive search for it (We didn't autmatically assume stolen, this was when the new generation came out and we were switching stuff around).

Now, I can tell you, it is a big deal.

I'm checking out 512MB Creative MuVo units for under $120.00. Are any of those worth a look? Some of the etailers with the low prices are pretty darn shady, and NewEgg is out of the iRocks.

IPOD!!!! Why the hell would you buy anything else. Just buy a hdd when you get back and fix your old one and sell it. I'm sure you can get near 180 for a 3g 10gb ipod anyway. Heck you could probably get 100 for the busted one. Try that with your zen or carbon

But "teh ipod iz kewl!!11!1oneoneone" In high school maybe... btw, when do you take the class which teaches you where question marks go? ;)

:fire;

1. Features - you mean stuff that I don't need? Voice recording is nice, but a novelty for me. I do wish I had an FM reciever for npr in general, market, and "all things considered,"

2. Sound Quality - yes.you are right. however, I choose to listen to QUALITY AUDIO through my stereo. ...and yes most of my music is in lossless and is as such when I put it on my pod unless I am patient and use anapod to transcode it. Lossless vs 320kbps mp3s don't make a difference when I am pedaling my ass of on my bike in the middle of the woods or listening to it in my car. You need Shur's to tell the difference.

3. ogg and/or flac support - I see nothing wrong with mp3, mp4 and Apple Lossless support. Using dbpower amp I successfuly converted all of my wma lossless to apple lossless withut a hitch and vice versa for sharing my lossless file samples by converting my mp4 lossless to wma lossless.....not a big deal. Oh, and don't bother telling me flac is better than apple lossless. It probably is, but once again, you probably won't be able to appreciate except if you are in a quiet room with shure e'x on. That, and wma lossless can go to 96/192....as if it matters....:p

4. battery life - you win. I have no quams here. Personally I don't require 24 hours of battery life, but I could see where it would be useful.

5. right to freely manipulate music you own - ?! - if yo uare talking about copy protection, that issue is somewhat universally applicable to all copy-protected material

6. free choice in collection management software - Yes. And much of it is complete crap. I'll admit that a few are quite good, but itunes and anapod have kept me happy.

After a small amount of research, I decided I'd like to snag a couple MuVo Micro N200 512MB units. Unfortunately, so did everybody else in the country. Can't find them in stock anywhere! I settled on the white 256MB version, which was available at NewEgg for $92.50 each. I might even have purchased them there, but they charge $5.00 to ship one, and $10.00 to ship two! WTF would they do that? Pisses me off, so I got them shipped for $10.00 less from another store that is also very reputable.

Amen!

I'll probably buy the Sandisk 256MB with FM Tuner for my wife.

Another favorite is the Creative Labs NOMAD MuVo.

If you don't want sound quality or features, why not buy a 40gb budget player in the low $200s instead of Apple's $300 for 20gb, $400 for 40? Reencoding files is unnecessary extra work for the sake of "thinking different" and the iPod is the only player about which I've heard horror stories of losing everything on the device thanks to protection features. Whether you like iTunes or not is beside the point, you have no real choice with an iPod, unless you want to use unsupported 3rd party software. Even then you only have a slightly larger choice. God forbid you be able to do it with a file manager...

Edit: just occurred to me, encoding from one lossy format to another will result in files that sound worse than any file encoded to lossy straight from a CD; it's a copy of a copy essentially, and different lossy formats discard data according to different criteria. If you eventually come to your senses and get a non-Apple player, you're going to have to re-convert yet again if you've used aac, which will be worse yet.

Yeah $5 off $50 first time customer (which I think my wife qualifies for).

However with Amazon we earn triple Amazon points and more affiliate $ than Buy.com

I just got a Creative Zen extra 60 GB player for 270 from amazon.com with a 20 dollar MIR. Solid storage is a joke. 256 megs is not nearly enough. Heck, cd-mp3 players arren't enough music choice for me. Besides, even if i dont ever use all 60 gigs for music, its a backup removeable hard drive. Maybe not as pretty as an ipod, but a heck of a lot cheaper, unless you plan on getting a 4 gb, which wouldn't come close to holding all my music. Also, you can buy a 2nd battery for ~40 bucks if neccessary. Choice is up to you. Especially handy if the battery itself ever dies, unlike teh silly ipod mail-in policy.

$300.00 to play MP3s is not only a joke, it's retarded! And, in a fragile HDD to boot... brilliant!

"Music choice" is on the HDD of the desktop or laptop PC, which can be accessed at least daily. Spending that much to cart everything around is ludicrous, unless you can't get back to the PC for days or weeks.
