THis is what I bought a few weeks ago...Nike PSA Portable CD Player with MP3 Capability by Philips


<--not happy. THis thing is a BATTERY hog. I have to change the batteries every few days and that is with only a little use. My Dad's Sony lasts a month with the same task.


Anyways, I bike a lot and am looking for something better that i can exchange it for.





At first I was interested in this....Panasonic Portable CD/MP3 Player SLCT700


But it is still bulky and will make me wear a bag when i bike just for it.


I am however, REALLY interested in the RCA Lyra? 128MB Pocket MP3 Player


and am going to return my cd player today. Should I take the RCA Kyra. It is so small, and with a writstrap it seems perfect. I will have to down-convert a lot of my well-recorded mp3s but it might be worth it.


UPDATE: THis is what I got and couldn't be happier...unless someone can point me to a compatible wrist strap.....Sony High Speed Net MD? Walkman® Recorder for $99 @ CC

I've been looking into that. Only uses 1 AA battery but maximum battery life is 10 hours, which probably means about 6-8 for normal use

Moving parts = much more batteries used.


Get a solid state memory MP3 player. I have a few different older rios that last a long time on 1 AA. I've seen some newer ones that advertise 35hrs on a rechargeable AA.

but a tripple a isn't that bad. two double A's for about every 2hrs of play(yeah I know...that uscks)is just rediculous...

CDs aren't solid state, and the only OTHER data transfer medium, minidiscs, are not solid state either, Goosemaster... what are you getting at?

noo..i meant the RCA lyra..it uses internal flash.

I was just referrign to the CD player... your title says MP3 CD player or this, and you talk about how it sucks down batteries. I was making a comment on that, not the lyra.

dammnit..i hate buying electronics..so many damn coicies....


MD looks good and cheap...disks i mean....I can get a LOT of music on there.....would be good for long trips....hmmmmm



The RCA just looks cool.....if i only use it for short trips..such as biking....



MD looks like it's winning...no track display though

The lyra looks good. I just picked up an iRock 830 and love it. MP3/WMA/FM-Tuner. Plays all my mp3s fine (vbr and up to 320kbps no problem). It runs on 1 AA battery and claims 30 hours of playback on 1 battery.

However, it's not expandable (it's 128MB, they're coming out with a 256MB 860 model), and there's no shuffle which I would have liked. 128MB is plenty for me, I use it for running mainly.

But...I think it's sexier than the Lyra ;)

One of my friends can't get over his minidisc obsession...personally I think solid state is the way to go.

Yeah,...the Lycra is cute..but not that eye-cathing....


THe mini-disc thing though allows for me to take A LOT of muci with me in my pocket....entire albums......

Does RCA still make you convert to MPX (encrypted BS) when it uploads to the player like the gen1 Lyra?

Huh?? What do you mean no track display??? I know my Sony NetMD N505 has it on there. Heck it'll display the album, the artist, how much time is left on the track or the album. And if you're willing to spend a little extra $ you can get remote units that have displays on them. I bought one for my Sony MZ-R70DPC originally (then I sold it) but it works just fine with my N505. Basically it's a stick style remote that has a clip on it. Easy to operate the functions of my MD unit through it and it has a backlit LCD display as well. Paid about $30 for it via eBay although you may be able to get one for less. I also think people are underestimating how long the MD can last on batteries, on rechargeables it does get less battery life (personally it's usually around 9 hours for me) but if you use alkalines the battery life more than doubles, around 18-20 hours.

Not to hijack.. but how much does the 830 usually go for? That thing looks sexy.
But, the Lyra has a memory expansion slot.

Good choice. I did a quick search on eBay and came up with a dutch auction for the same remote I have for my unit here, you may want to check it out. And no it is not my auction just pointing him towards something he will find useful when jogging.
