yes....they are like mini-cds....they are smaller however so it takes less force to spin them and keep them spinning....

THat looks gorgeous..maybe in the future;)

MD does having moving parts, but it also has several shock absobing mechanisms built in to prevent skipping.

I have a Sharp Mt877. I can toss it, THROW IT, shake the hell out of it and it will NEVER skip.

Nope they are not solid state as there are moving parts. Here's the basic way MD players work. The disks themselves are magneto optical disks, in order to record a laser warms the surface so a magnetic head can write to it. Now in order to play a MD disc the unit's motor spins it for a couple of seconds, spools it all into memory and plays from memory at all times. Every so often it will spool in more music as the memory gets used.

Awesome :) How much was your sharp anyway? (SOrry Goose to jack your thread, I'm in the same boat as you but I had never previously considered MD)

This is the Sharp Mt877. This is the model of MD player/recorder that I own. It's somewhat dated technologically speaking, as it doesn't support NetMD. But, I love it and it's still in pristine condition. I've used several Sony MD players and I still prefer the mt877.
When it was released in the US it listed at around $350 I believe. I had mine imported before it was released here and I got a DEAL on it for almost $200.

One of the cool things about MD is that you can record live (on the fly) with various microphones or from any other audio source.
Watch out, some of the NetMD players that wont do this. A lot of them don't have the appropriate inputs for anything other than MP3 via a USB port.

Check out www.minidisco.com for a lot of available players and accessories.
I believe www.amazon.co.uk will import some Pre-recorded mini disc titles (if you decide you want to buy pre-recorded discs.

Yeah Sharp's MD equipment has always been considered pretty top notch. Have one of their CD/MD decks in the Sharp MD-R3 hooked up to my home system.

So I got the netMD...this thing ROCKS.

Small...sleek...AND THE FUKING LCD HAS A MULTI_CHARACTER DISPLAY>>>O_M_G.

Seriously, from the pictures I assumed this thing would only display a few characters. Despite it's EXTREMELY small size, it displays my ID3 tags well.

Lets see how it holds up battery wise.

Hey Goose - keep us updated about how that thing works for ya. I'd much rather get that than a normal MP3 player. Does it include an armstrap btw, or no?

Otherwise it is awesome....still transfering music to it.

Sounds awesome. The DSP is pretty good.
