Congratulations on doing what most people would never dare (or want) to do. I don't know anything about Somaliland but be careful when you do venture out. I was in the central and a bit towards the Eastern side of Ethiopia a year ago and when you venture out of the cities there are people with ak-47's wandering around in the middle of nowhere. We hired a soldier to accompany us (was mandated by the government in that area) and he chatted with the armed tribal locals but there's no telling what would happen if you were there alone. It was amazing and the vegetation and markets look similar. Ignore the naysayers but hopefully you take precautions and read up before you go.

The army/police was pretty hardcore trying to check all the vehicles which were heading west towards Addis Ababa (Ethiopian capital) as they are smuggling a lot of weapons from Somalia into Ethiopia (by muslims) to try to uprise against the Christians in Ethiopia, as Ethiopia is 2/3 Christian and the muslims there despise it.

Somaliland- 126 rapes 3,500,000 pop
US- 191,670 rapes 300,000,000 pop

How's your math?

To the OP - You go girl, plz keep us updated
Your also educating a lot of people here

Don't play stupid, unless you really are stupid enough to think rapes there are actually reported. Since, you know, Muslim women basically cannot report rape.

🙄

Nonsense, crime rates across Somalia are ridiculous, this is fact.haha, not. There is no way in fvck rates of rape are lower in Somalia than in the US.

How about you read the thread.

I see, I see, looks like I'm getting an education on Islam from nicky lol
I don't want to mess up this wonderful womans thread with a bunch of PnN
Maybe when she comes back to post again, she can straighten a few things out.

True, you can't be too sure.
The US is always critized for the way it does its stats for crime and unemployment.

You cannot trust stats from a country whose biggest city has no police force or government.

How do you count rapes when there is no one there to count it?

Oh and are you staying vegetarian because you wanna avoid camel and goat meat? They're delicious! (at least in Syria they are)

Nah, it's just been 15 years, I'm too far in at this point to let go. 🙂 Camel isn't on our every day menu, but goat often is, and we slaughter it right on campus.

Yeah, Somaliland is the same. The government mandates that foreigners travel with a guard, and they all sort of lackadaisically wander about with giant AKs. Took me sort of aback at first when I landed here and everyone treats it so nonchalantly, but I got accustomed to it really fast.

Maybe when she comes back to post again, she can straighten a few things out.

Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it!

The only thing I'll say is that most people seem not to recognize that Somaliland is truly different than Somalia. I am surprised at how stable it is here. It's not perfect by any means, and there are some cultural norms that need to be broken in order for it to stand a chance at being internationally recognized as its own country, but Somaliland is light years ahead of it's southern counterpart.

This is what I mean... Somalia does not have a government or proper police force. But Somaliland does. Not the best at this point, but it's a far cry from down there.

I'm really happy to be here though... went in a little blind with the lack of information out there, but now that I'm here, I'm so glad I came.

:hmm:
Sure, crime rares in Somalia are high.
But we aren't talking about Somalia. We are talking about Somaliland.

Unless you can acknowledge and more importantly distinguish the difference, it is no wonder most of you are still hyper on the "you will be raped/murdered/tortured by pirates/islamists/crazies"

you know what's disgusting?

the people who came in this thread saying stuff like "i dont see how you could be over there doing that when there's people in your own country suffering"

come the fuck on.

the human body, it was a broken leg.... do we just cut it off? do we just ignore it? so the infection can spread?

no, we heal it, what's good for one branch of the body is good for the entire body.

what this woman is doing is amazing, look at the grand scheme, these children.. maybe only ONE or TWO or a FEW of them, will be intelligent enough to see what she's done here, and maybe, they'll be inspired enough to do the same, maybe they'll succeed, and then help another long forgotton/ignored part of this Earth... see how this works? that's where improvement in quality of life for EVERYONE involved takes place.

OR, if she'd never came, they may grow up thinking, those assholes in the USA are all the same, they dont care, they only care about themselves.. and christianity is probably why...lets jihad!

when in reality, the MINORITY of americans think that way, as we've seen in this thread, the majority of americans, or humans in general, have the instinctual need to improve, it's wired into us. evolution.

this whole only about me, only about USA, mentality has to dissappear, this is 2011, we live on earth. it can be shitty, or it can be eutopia... do your part.

WoW!

What a great adventure!

I envy your experience and wish you great luck in your tasks.

Is there a way to donate to your particular teaching situation?

I would have no problem contributing if it can specifically help you and your class.

Perhaps a PayPal directly to you?

Good Luck and I admire your dedication.

Been a while since I posted in my own thread, but I thought some users might get a kick out of my stellar set-up in my computer science classroom.

If anyone has any grant-writing recommendations, I could use all the help I can get. Working with 10 year old laptops is testing my patience a bit (beyond the standard patience problems I have explaining double-clicking, highlighting text, and folders).

Please everyone have a beer for me, maybe an apple, some ice cream, and some non-long-life milk. 😛

Great! Nice to see things are working out! How's the food BTW? Don't have much experience with African cuisine myself, am interested.

Awesomeness! I don't have any expertise to offer on grant writing, but I wish you luck!

The food is... carbtastic. Rice, pasta, some more rice, some Somali chapati (like Indian naan), a little bit more pasta, and maybe some potatoes thrown in for good measure. Cabbage, carrots, onions and tomatoes are about the extent of our vegetables.

I do not exaggerate when it comes to the starch overload... dinner tonight was pasta with potatoes and chapati. We have a local cook, but I can't say I'm overly excited every day about the meals. Everything is good, it's just carbs to the max. I'd give anything right now for a fresh salad.

I'll be going to Ethiopia soon, I'll let you know how it compares. 🙂

And to check against the expectations of some of the other posters in this thread, how much have you been harassed and denigrated and assaulted so far?
