I'd do it, just to see life from a different perspective. Some people fear death and pain so much they prevent themselves from living, that's just sad.
 
Kudos, Rill22! I'd be very interested in hearing about your day to day adventures in teaching. Even just your impressions of daily life there would be welcome. If I can gather resources for your CS classes and send them to you, I'd be happy to.

I'm not going to lie... while the burger isn't really appealing, I know that things like onion rings will, over time, sound like heaven in a basket. Fortunately the novelty of Somali food hasn't worn off yet. Give it another week.

You are as likely to be raped in the West.

The Guards are there to ensure nothing happens, not because there is a high chance but because it is the only option for the Government. Because Somaliland is not recognized, it has to stay perfect to prevent any tarnishes on it's bid for recognition by the West.

How are you holding up with the food?
It's a shame you do not eat meat.

Not bad... not eating meat has not been a problem so far. I'm one of three or four vegetarians here. Once the school year starts as well, we'll get more variety. We import a couple staples for the staff as well... cornflakes, honey, peanut butter, and a few others.

After speaking with some of the past staff, it appears as if many of the incoming staff have tendencies to lose weight upon arrival here, sometimes significant amounts.

We worked with a group of kids from the local village yesterday, and I was amazed to learn their ages... physically comparing a 12-year-old here and a 12-year-old back home is like comparing night and day. They are so small, and not just in terms of weight, but developmentally speaking. While we struggle to keep the weight off our kids, it looks like it's all they can do to keep it on. I would have guessed the majority of them to be around 7 years old.

Amazing kids though, really special, and so unbelievably appreciative. A far cry from many of our students at home in the US.

i have gotten to lnow many Somali people over the years. extremely nice people. if thats really you in that pic, then i can see why theyd want to accompany you around. good luck over there.

What I hate about africa under the sahara, is the chance of getting diarrhea or barfing. If you have armed guards, it's safe enough.
 
Did you take any soccer balls with you? I bet they are like gold over there.
Every time I see photos of kids in Africa playing soccer, it is with something other than a real soccer ball.
 
Best of luck over there. I hope to see updates over time of how it goes over there. I've had a few friends that have spent time on similar trips and they have all come back as better and happier people. Good luck 🙂

PS: This thread reminds me of the incredible dichotomy between the posters that are in touch with reality and those who are just dicks. Do you really think everyone is as naive as you to think that they might be in danger if they left the suburbs?
