I think that is an old myth. It is such a multicultural place now.

Only problems I know of was the island of Kauai. Small island with on 60,000 residents. Very poor place with little to no hope of a bright future. So you get a lot of upset locals who take out their frustrations on not islanders who worked in the tourist trade. In their view you were taking a job from them.

They leave the tourists alone because the police would never allow them to bother them, but beating up some hotel worker is a different story. I know of at least one person from a cruise ship being put into a hospital.

Big warning DON'T DANCE WITH THIER WOMEN especially at a locals place, will start fights.

It surprises me when people complain about the predominant local political views. I had an old friend actually move away from San Francisco because she felt it was just too liberal and couldn't imagine raising her kids under such circumstances. Um, excuse me? WTF? If you can't deal with people possessing different views than yourself, then you have a much bigger problem than anyone might have suspected. Look at me ... I'm fairly well entrenched in the liberal side of the spectrum (at least socially) and I moved directly into the heart of a Republican Stronghold (Orange County, CA) about a year ago. You think I give two craps what my neighbors political views are? Nope. I don't waste one second of my time with it, nor would I ever let it guide my actions in any way. Who cares?
I can see moving away from a place like that in order to raise children.
I went to high school in small town Maine, sucked and was boring as hell.
But in hindsight it was a great 'safe' place with a good education system. (Very liberal, but I escaped)
I'd much rather raise my kids on a small town with a conservative view than a large liberal city.

Ewww, you're from Maine? DAMNIT. Do me a favor and lie. Tell people you're from Tejas or something.
I am a Navy brat. Since birth... Florida, California, New Jersey, Maine, Florida, Maine then since getting out of high school Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Virginia, (14 weeks in Hawaii) Florida where I am now.

You don't need to adapt at all. People in Hawaii are just laid back people who most likely could give a sh!t less about politics. I'm a conservative living in California, and I do just fine...although it does help that we have Arnold, a moderate, in power, and I live in a pretty conservative district.

I hope you enjoy it :) Hawaii would be too radical for me...I don't think I could acheive anything there insofar as what I would want to do for a career~ seems mostly tourist stuff. When you are done with Hawaii and realize that it is a totally different thing to visit there twice a year for two weeks at a home versus to live there come enjoy CA :D

Oh - be prepared to get used to Island Life were things move 1000x more slower.

Right-wingers - why did he have to post some nonsense about how he's all 'worried' about the move to a blue state, when all he wanted to do was to brag?

Why they have to be deceitful in so much, even "hey, I'm moving to Hawaii and I'm excited and wanted to say so" being too hard to say and instead needing some 'cover story'...

Lighten up Francis... In through the nose... out through the mouth... Not everything is life or death in this forum... indulge me.

The only thing that is going to be weird for me is being able to golf in January and the extra taxes. We get kind of spoiled up here with no income tax and no sales tax. But I suppose the golf thing will help to offset the pain...

Eh, my family leans to the left and we have lived in a neighborhood that is to the far right on every issue for about 18 years. We don't agree with our neighbors on politics, but the area is nice and the school system is as well. I could care less about what my neighbors think, as long as it's not forced on me.

Out here, we'd out you as a poseur within 15 minutes - the cosmetology would be dead giveaway. You need a ruddy complexion to earn your Card :p

I suspect your neighhbours are planning an Intervention which will include Cucumber Boarding!

Any suggestions to ease the transition?
Polish up on your intelligent conversation skills. And don't be surprised if you see a BMW or Mercedes; they are pretty common here.

Heh... I'm selling my Mercedes before I take off. I was thinking that I'd look good in a BMW convertible. ;)

I heard Hawaii is pretty much split into rich/poor. They don't have much of a middle class.

I'd move to Lanai or MoloKai if you don't have to work. Real estate is about same as midwest and it's sparse yet beautiful as any other island. People all over Hawaii is cool as hell from my experiance but I don't like high density or traffic or tourists.

-Keep in mind you pronounce every vowel in a word so people know what the heck you are talking about..

Small towns and exurbia ans suburbia must be some of the most depressing places on earth. I don't know why people want to raise children in such horrible places.

The place I grew up in is still there, but the particular time period is long gone, sadly.

Something I didn't know. Hey neighbor!
Well howdy, neighbor! :D

Liberals in the OC? Tell me its not true ;) Just stick around any one of the number of campuses (I'm at UCI;)) and you'll be fine...once you hit all the plastic boxy houses you know there is trouble.

In Alaska now... moving to Hawaii.

Alaska is awesome. But after 33 years in the most extreme climate on earth I'm tired. I've seen -72 and +96 within six months. I've played golf at midnight and marveled at a full moon at 3pm.

I want a nice boring tropical island where the record highs and lows are about five degrees off the average tempurature. I want to play golf on a whim in December. The only question I have is... How does a solid conservative deal with life in a very blue state?

I think that Alaska and Hawaii have a lot in common... We both feel a little duped when it comes to the whole statehood thing (Hawaii more so) and we both resent subjecting ourselves to the rule of Washington. Both are very independent. Both have an abundance of natural beauty. Both have boom and bust economies. Both are rich in natural resources (Oil for Alaska and pasty white folks for Hawaii) Both have a love/hate relationship with tourists.

When Alaska was voted into the union it was done under the assumption that it would turn out to be a democrat stronghold. Little did they know... Hawaii did in fact turn out to be a Dem stronghold. For now anyway...

So... how do I adapt? Or should I just shut up and enjoy my tan?

How about become liberal?

Talk about boring...
Maui or the big island would be the best. Oahu is VERY crowded, incredible place, more like Hong Kong than any American city (I would guess)
Maui is more like a big town though, no real tall buildings. Very laid back, awsome place to visit.
Big island has a little bit of everything. Only draw back is its small town life, there really is no major cities.

Biggest adjustments will have nothing to do with politics. Get ready for a very high cost of living. But man, you'll probably have a great time there if you're in good financial shape. No reason to waste time on these forums when you could be scuba diving or hiking a volcano, etc.
