MoveOn.org: Bad for Democrats?

So who is MoveOn? Consider this: Howard Dean finished first in the MoveOn primary. Number Two wasn't John Kerry or John Edwards -- it was Dennis Kucinich. Listing the issues that resonate most with their membership, Boyd and Blades cite the environment, the Iraq War, campaign-finance reform, media reform, voting reform and corporate reform. Somewhere after freedom, opportunity and responsibility comes "the overlay of security concerns that everybody shares." Terrorism as a specific concern is notably absent. As are jobs. As is health care. As is education.

A lot of Conservative people think that MoveOn.org is good for Republicans because it makes Democrats look like Far-Left wackos.

What do you guys think:
Is MoveOn.org a good thing for Democrats?

As long as the Swiftboat liars and their GOP backers are pushing out ads filled with lies and deception, then MoveOn.org should keep right on doing what they're doing. Besides, hth reads Rolling Stone anymore?

No they don't. Through the 1st half of 2004, Rolling Stone was at #69 in terms of paid copy sales.
http://www.magazine.org/Circulation/cir..._trends_and_magazine_handbook/8621.cfm

Let's see, the top 3 magazines were AARP The Magazine, AARP Bulletin, and Reader's Digest. Those seem like magazines kids read

When I say kids, I mean HS school student and freshmen in college. You know, the young voters that MoveOn.org seems to like to target.

From your list, the magazines kids read:
#25. Maxim
#55. Teen People
#69. Rolling Stone - 1.26 million copies distributed.

But really, none of that matters. You distracted me with this crap, like you're so good at. :|

This isn't about who reads Rolling Stone, it's about what the article said.

Please stay on topic.

Kids (as in teens and early 20s) don't read People? Cosmo? Seventeen? Glamour? Men's Health? ESPN The Magazine? Car and Driver? Entertainment Weekly? Cosmo Girl? Vogue?

The ones that buy Rolling Stone aren't buying it for the political issues raised. But, I see you've missed that point I was trying to make.

I understand your point. My question isn't related to who reads Rolling Stone. My question is about MoveOn.org's impact on the Democratic Party, that just happens to be laid out in that article.

Just so we are clear, this discussion is supposed to be about MoveOn.org and their contribution(s) to the Democratic Party and whether or not those are good contributions. Reading that article made me curious and I thought it would be a good topic for discussion.

I did not realize that this thread would be highjacked because Rolling Stone isn't the most popular magazine. The fact that the article appeared in Rolling Stone has nothing to do with the article.

I meant the part about who reads RS as a joke.

I LOVE Moveon.org.

I donated some time doing some door-knocking a few weeks before the election. I wish I thought of doing this BEFORE I was married. The girls in this group were DOWNRIGHT FINE! If I weren't married, I would've been all over that action. ;)

But, I'm a happily, married man. :(

Had the actual primaries turned out like moveon's, maybe things would have turned out better for the Dems in November.

The problem with liberals is that they think anything that doesn't meet their agenda is a pack of lies and that keeps them from seeing the truth in any issue. The truth is that Kerry is an opportunistic coward. Four months, three Purple Hearts and one self inflected. Some hero!

Bush uses his family name to avoid any real service, does drugs, barely (and I mean barely) passes exams and then goes AWOL. Now THAT'S a piece of garbage.

Since I see his record as just being preparation for his future in politics, I have no problem with criticizing his use of it or the way he got it. I was in Nam 71/72 and my wife was scared to admit that her husband was there because of him and the crazies that he led. She really has a huge level of disgust for him. I never was subject to his propaganda machine because I wasn't here during that time. It was disgusting to hear while in the field that what was being won through sacrifice was being given away back home by epople who didn't know sacrifice.

He never actually went AWOL while Kerry actually brags about being a war criminal. He went to Alabama in the guard after volunteering for SEA service and being rejected because his bird was being dropped from the combat inventory. He didn't see the career opportunities that Kerry did in Vietnam. Bush just wasn't as forward thinking as Kerry was. Besides, Bush admits that he was just in it for the good times back then.

Whatever they want to decide for their party is cool, can't really say I know much about Dennis Kucinich, so I just took a look.

Dennis Kucinich on the Issues:

Abortion: Abortions should always be legal.

Military: Must cut Pentagon spending.

Gay marriage: Allow gays and lesbians to marry.

Corporations: "The role for government [regulation] is breaking up the monopolies, insisting on public disclosure, insisting on public audits, insisting on restitution whenever someone has been cheated." If that's the extent of what he wants the gov't to intercede with,.

Crime: Terminate the federal death penalty, even if unpopular.

Drugs: Hasn't smoked marijuana, but would decriminalize it. A liar, but .

Education: Vouchers divert public money away from public schools.

Energy & Oil: Raise CAFE standard from 27.5 mpg to 45, and 40 for SUVs. Nuclear waste poses grave danger to US. Will sign Kyoto climate change treaty. on all three.

Foreign Policy: His Iraq war policy was unlisted, but "Voted YES on keeping Cuba travel ban until political prisoners released." means a temporary  from me.

Free Trade: Withdraw from WTO because they disallow protecting jobs. Free trade encourages privatization, so avoid it. First act as president will be to cancel NAFTA.  and ! Jesus, can't there ever be a candidate with working brain cells when it comes to finances?

Gun Control: Require background checks, licensing, and fingerprinting. Voted NO on prohibiting suing gunmakers & sellers for gun misuse. and .

Health Care: Health is a right, not a privilege. Great talking point, but good luck trying to pull that one off - we're struggling up in Canada as it is with the costs, and we've got 10x less people.

Homeland Security: Bush doctrine of preemption and unilateralism is wrong. Very large  from me. I like eliminating problems before they come knocking on my doorstep.

In general, he sounds like a pretty decent candidate. Not my ideal candidate, but no extremist.

I will never, EVER, understand why people act as though abortion is a GREAT thing.. YIPPIE!!! THE MORE ABORTIONS THE BETTER!! You act as though its like Freedom of Speech..

Abortions are horrible.. in ALL cases.. Its an absolute tradgedy that babies are being killed. We can argue whether or not in some cases its justified but stop parading around like abortions are some sort of BENEFIT to society.. We should be working toward a society where abortion is never needed.. But I sometimes think supporters of abortion think they need to work toward a society where abortions are common and accepted. What good does that do us? Yippie!! Another dead baby! ALL REJOICE!
