Ya, I think the Culture shock there wouldn't be so bad either. Especially when it comes to Political Ideals. Except that in Australia Voting is Mandatory, but that's not much of a major issue.

heh, just make sure you don't say you're american.....it seems that americans are not so welome there right now....

Students quit over anti-American slurs

AMERICAN students are quitting Queensland universities in the face of hate attacks by Australians angry at US President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq.

One university has launched an investigation into claims an American student returned to the US after suffering six months of abuse at a residential college in Brisbane.

American students have told The Sunday Mail the verbal attacks are unbearable and threatening to escalate into physical violence.

Griffith University student Ian Wanner, 19, from Oregon, said abusive Australian students had repeatedly called him a "sepo" ? short for septic tank. "It is so disrespectful. It's not exactly the most welcoming atmosphere here," he said.

Just leave. I am sure that you will be back though as most of the 'great' socieites of the world are simply good at hiding their real problems.

I've been to Canada many times. It strikes me as a test tube filled with every bad idea the Libs in the US ever dreamed up and had the people vote down.

I haven't seen too many votes for latin america. I have friends who have a daughter in school in Costa Rica. She thinks it's paradise on earth. Sure, you never know when the odd guerilla rebellion is going to break out but the cost of living is cheap and the climate is just abot perfect.

I think I'd want to try out New Zealand first though.

Here's a good read for those of you seriously considering...

The recommended countries might be out of date by now but the author lists his favorite places to run away to and rates them by health care, cost of living, people, environment, etc...

What other countries would be good places to relocate?

I've been to New Zealand, it's quite nice.

Where did you go in New Zealand? My favorite places were Auckland and Christchurch. I could see myself living in Christchurch, almost a perfect city.

I am an expat already, and have been almost all my life. I have american friends living in France and Italy, and in both cases they always say to me they wouldn't go back to the US no matter what. They still love their motherland, but just find life more fun and pleasurable in those country. On the other hand, the americans living in London usually say life is almost the same as it was back in the US, so that they usually plan to go back someday. I really like Swiss, but I just couldn't live there. I think most of the people relocating there do that for economical reasons.

Personally I think I will one day move to Mexico, Cuba or some austral-african country like Namibia. Definitely I will not spend my middle-to-old-age years in New York or Paris...

It makes perfect sense. When you are attempting to acquire wealth you need an open and free market, capitalist system. Once you have your wealth why not move to a place where your biggest expenses are taken care of for free? ;)

Thing is they are not as dumb as you think they are. first they don't let the riff-raff in like the united states does, i.e. bettter have a couple million dollars to immigrate, second they won't allow you to get these benefits just going there to retire. Thrid they'll tax the crap out of you once you get there with insane property, sales, investment taxes ... again I don't get it.

Plus, you're admitting your moral foundations against taxation/socialism/theft are a fraud.

Are you talking about Switzerland? Because you don't need a couple of million dollars to immigrate anywhere in the world if you're a refugee. Switzerland has many failed refugees too. They even house some of them in underground WW2 bunkers.

Switzerland is not socialist so no I'm not talking about them. And they don't let many in which has been very contentious with the EU and stuff. Illegals they arrest they ship back the same day they find them. They hardy ever grant citzenship which means any benefits you may want you're not getting. My uncle has lived there 40 years. is an engineer for a respected swiss mining equipment manufacturer and his kids were born there.. still not Swiss.

I'm talking about NZ, Ireland and such. Plus coming from USA you sure as hell won't qualify for "refugee" LOL.

There are a lot of great places to live. HOWEVER, if you are worried about government interference, the US is probably one of the best, even with this latest decision that people are overreacting to.

Actually in more than a few countries all it takes is $50k in a savings acct or the purchase of real estate (a house) in excess of a certain amount to become a citizen. (Usually around $250k) Not millions. Second, no criminal record = not riff-raff. Third, as with most countries (The US Included) there are ways to shelter your assets from unreasonable taxation. And that's only if you plan on becoming a citizen. Keep your US citizenship and it becomes more or less like a permanent vacation with a house instead of a hotel room.

Switzerland has always fascinated me.
A friend just got back from Switzerland - he told me breakfast was about $30 US, but maybe thats because the dollar is so weak, dunno.

I have read somewhere that to become a Swiss citizen, you have to be there gainfully employed 10 years, then all the people in your area have to vote whether to accept you, and if you fail you have to wait 5-9 years to reapply. Is this true??
Do people in the cities still walk and bicycle around with their rifles on their shoulders in public?? (Going to a shooting range)

I vaguely remember that it wasnt until 1979 that women were allowed the vote there.

Also, there are many American retirees living in Mexico - you can live like a king on the $1800 month Soc Security check.
They even have a name for them down there - espalda's - "drybacks".

Second, no criminal record = not riff-raff.

Wrong. No depositing ones self within thier territory and eating on the government safty net = no riff raff. That's why many countries have very stringent financial requirements = Smart Idea. I forgot under some extrordinary circumstances one can qualify under "skills" catagory.. which pretty much precludes riff-raff again... Minimum of a Masters Degree and a trade that they are having difficulty in filling with natives... doctors, engineers etc... Think of it like our H1B. Then you don't have to be a millionaire.

You must understand these countries are surrounded by potential economic refugees/opportunists who would abuse thier system like is happening in Germany and France, which is bankrupting them from immigrants from turkey, algeria, afghanistan, east europe and the former Soviet block.

Socialism has swept the planet. What can you do

No it has'nt..I told you Mexico, Bolivia, Chile any sub-sarahan African country except south africa and get this, former communist Russia. Russia has only 13% max income tax rate!! Shyt some US states have higher taxes than that let alone federal... None of these countries have universal health care, minimum wage, extensive public schools, welfare, and other redistributionist stuff the right hates. Those countries are a capitalists dream come true. I just can't believe no ones mentioned moving to them yet..

Immigrants to the U.S. face no such problems I'm sure. Not.
In any case, I would bet Americans are not popular anywhere in the World, since Bush turned the post 9/11 outpouring of sympathy to sh!t with his Iraq escapade.

ROFL!!!!

See what I mean about believing the "mainstream" media?

The American(s) who reportedly were abused probably instigated part of the problem. Being human, it couldn't be their fault. Plus, the media LOVES to blow things out of proportion.

In America it is considered poor form to defend our Nation so if someone bashes it we collectivly nod our head and whip ourselves. In other countries they stand up for their Nation.

Here Americans "must" not only accept a foreigners opinon, even if they are in the country illegal meaning they are felons, but we must embrace them and give them more benefits that law abiding citizens. In other nations if we go there and avoid adapting their lifestyle and tell them how awful their country is compared to any other country they are going to be rude back.

Quit reading the mainstream media. If those who do have not figured it out yet, fake but true, means lying through the teeth to advance an agenda.

Well.. they're not exactly considered the nicest countries to live in, though I've heard decent things about Chile aside the fact that it is poor. Most people don't want to live in poor places.

Also, a lot of developing countries have lower rates for corruption reasons and simply because they are poor. I would expect that if people got richer they would go towards the average more.

Never met racist Scandinavians, though I'm sure there are some, like everywhere. They are very open-minded. They have some of the earliest women's movements. The weather is cold, but lots of wilderness. And the eye thing is borderline racist on your part.
