...but is the phone itself any good?

Looks cool and all. Just wondering if any there are any Motorola V3 users here and what their thought are.

I'm also on a tight budget so not $300 or $1000 mobile handsets for me.

No it's not. If it's free it's still a crappy deal.

Edit: For those who don't believe, I could've gotten a RaZr for free easily back in November 2004. Hello. We're in 2006 now, and you're talking about a phone based on early 2004 technology? My Moto V600 that I got in August 04 for free has the exact same technology in the RaZr. VGA camera, Bluetooth, Quadband, video.. hey we all have that today in a RaZr still.

That said, the V3x that just came out recently and is probably only available at Asian stores for now is finally Motorola's late answer to SE's K750i that came out back in APRIL 2005? We're like a freaking year later now, and you finally release a phone that takes pictures that still look worse than a phone one year older? Pathetic.

You're talking about the Razr, right? I'm very happy with mine. It's a nice phone and the built in USB port is a plus.

I have a Razr too and I'm satisfied with it. I basically use it just as a phone (no web browsing, etc.) and to take a picture once in a while and it works fine. Plus it looks cool and the USB port is definitely handy.

Excellent, I don't use any really advanced features myself either. Just want to call, some text and take a picture or two ... very rarely. So I should be happy. My current phone is a Nokia 7250i <-

I'm not interested in keeping up with the most modern and most expensive phone.

Just wanted to replace my 7250i and the Razr seemed like a great deal. So I thought why not.

I'm not a mobile phone geek.

Delerium, you don't get it. Myself (and others) didn't buy it for 'tech'. Hell, I'm annyoed that it has a camera. I bought it because it was cheap ($30 for me), thin, was a flip phone, and had the features I wanted (bluetooth & a USB port).

I couldn't care less that there are phones that have 'better tech'

and it's not like 2004 was the paleolithic age here, it was just 15 months ago.

People have turned Cell Phones into a device bloated with unneeded features. Personally, I just want a phone that fits well in the pocket, gets good reception, and can place calls. The razr does this just fine, 2004 technology or not.

Thanks, So, PaulNEPats and InlineFour.

You guys think like me. Glad to have your views. The phone arrives in about 2 days. It's going to be a welcome upgrade for me (the usb port feature is great, no more expesive cables to connect phone to computer). 2004 technology is probably more advanced than I need, a nice solid non plastic phone is a welcome change.

 Glad to help. Mine is one of the Cingular 'black plastic' ones, and it feels plenty solic, so I'd bet yours will be quite sturdy.

You are speaking only because many people here aren't cell phone crazy.

To me this is seeing the world buy computers that were available in early 2004. Prescotts? And then run around thinking Intel is king.

Just like we GH junkies frown at people who run around with Prescotts claiming Intel rules all, myself and many others (say from Howard or whatever) think that the RaZr is just overrated and its a piece of junk.

You're absolutely right you might not need all those things, but you wouldn't buy an AGP system for the same price as a PCI-e system right? It's the same thing.

Buying what you need doesn't mean buying old. It means buying the right budget device today.

The USB port is useless without the proprietary Mobile Phone Tools.

I'd recomend spending $20 on a bluetooth dongle so you can transfer/receive wirelessly. :)

Style wise, you do have to admit it's quite attractive. The public seems to like the design. Hell, every manufacturer is trying to copy the RAZR look.

For a guy who's not phone savy, the RAZR will suit him more than enough. Throw in a bluetooth dongle and you'll be technologically advance than 70% of mobile users.

Are you thinking of signing a contract? It will save you quite a lot but you'll be locked with that carrier.

well no, i just want to get a new phone.

I'm out of a contract with cingular but don't want to renew for 2 years. signing on with T-mobile or Verizon with my family plan of 3 years, the 3 phone activation cost is around $105 and the plans do not seem to be as good as my current old ATT plan.

$200 won't get you a phone with the latest technology. Is a flip phone necessary? It seems like flip phones are only popular in the states, while candybar style and sliders are more popular in Europe and Asia.

dang...$200 doesn't buy you what it used too. :(

No, flip is not necessary but preferable. I like them because on the non-flip ones, the exposed screens keep getting scratched up by things in my pocket like coins, keys, etc. But I guess i can always buy those screen protectors.

You'll get much more if you look used though. Prices of cell phones drop like an anvil. :D

I'd sugguest looking at a Sony Ericsson K750i.

There's no such thing as a good RAZR deal unless its completely free and you don't have to switch carriers. Seriously.

<-- disgruntled RAZR user

Actually, I'd be happy with my phone if someone figured out how to wipe the flashrom and load new software on it. The UI, phonebook, apps etc. are just atrocious.
