I work with a woman whose brother was on the waiting list for a liver. She told me that her brother's doctor said helmet laws have really cut down on the organs available for those waiting for donors.

That's odd, since the trend for at least a decade now has been for states to repeal mandatory helmet laws.

Fucking idiots.

I'm in CA. Still have mandatory helmet laws here.

Well because CA is about as socialist as you can get, lol. Same with NY. NY actually might be worse now that I think about it.

It's not the gov'ts job to tell us how to live. If you don't want to wear a lid and you crack your head wide open like a canyon, oh well, that was YOUR choice.

I would personally never operate a motorycle with out a helmet, but that's my choice because I am smart enough and responsible enough to know it's a wise decision.

In Texas to get a helmet exemption you need to show proof of medical insurance to the dmv and they give you a sticker to put on your plates. That is the best way to do it IMO.

In MI we have this wonderful thing called no fault..
They just repealed the helmet law here last year..

Lets say you run a stop sign and some guy with no helmet tbones your rig and ends up as a vegtable. In the wonderful state of MI, its the taxpayers responsibility to pay for all of that. Neat huh? Also have a fee associated with it on all of our insurance premiums. Depending on what you buy, can be up to 500 bucks a year.

My coworker is an ex cop and said he's seen numerous 20 year old paraplegic guys in nursing homes being taken care of from motorcycle accidents. I can't imagine being that poor guy surrounded by people in their 90's. Fuck that.

I wear all gear all the time and I only ride on weekends and after traffic has died down. I take roads I know are easy to be on. I'm pretty sure I speed half the time but mostly +5-10mph over nothing more.

There were times people just almost merged into me, on purpose. I was ahead of the car in my left lane so I know they saw me...they were in the right lane. They thought it was funny to pull up next to me and then half past me and get in the lane. I was pissed, I wanted to chase the person down and break their windshield.

Good thing there was a center turn lane so I escaped.

I agree with you, but it's $175 per vehicle, not anywhere near $500.

Well based on the 28% increase in the last two years..

It wont be long right?

Its going up July 1 again FYI.
Keep in mind the system is 2 Billion in the red... Dont think they are going to continue to increase it?

There is legislation in the works to eliminate MCCA as we speak. I expected increases after repealing the helmet laws:

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/...409/METRO/Michigan-motorcycle-fatalities-rise

The number of seriously injured riders not wearing a helmet jumped from 24 in 2011 to 195 in 2012.

Sad that those of us who ride responsibly and wear a helmet get to finance the cost of the idiot Harley riders who just want to look cool.

"Gear" does nothing against being t-boned at the intersection cause they were checking their texts.

This is complete bullshit. A guy I work with was t-boned at an intersection by some clueless cager a few months ago while riding home from work. He was wearing full gear which consisted of a full-face helmet, gloves, Aerostich suit and boots.

The car hit his bike right in front of the rear wheel, he was thrown over the hood of the car and landed on the pavement. His bike was totalled (an older Ducati Multistrada coincidentally) and he suffered a broken ankle, missed about a week of work (well, he was working from home) but he's back now, mostly healed up (still has a bit of a limp), he bought a newer Multistrada 1100 S and is riding it to work every day.

If he was wearing a Corona t-shirt, shorts, flip-flops and no helmet he may well have been killed in that accident.

Oh, and you're afraid of motorcycles. We get it.

Afraid of motorcycles? No.
Afraid of the "people of Walmart" behind the wheel of the car at the intersection? You're damn right.
I love motorcycles in every form. Dirt, cruisers, sport, enduro etc..

My words of wisdom: Dont ride if you don't accept the consequences of doing so.

Ways of mitigating the risk of riding on a motorcycle are wearing a helmet, full leather gloves, leather jacket, full length leather boots and even leather/kevler pants.

True that there are some instances no amount of gear will save you from your fate, but I bet for 99% of the other instances where death is not certain, the person wearing the most gear will walk away the least hurt.

and +2 for OFT clearly being afraid of/hating on bikes.

This. I've just started riding along with my brother on our Harleys. In our province if you don't have a licence you can still ride beside someone who does. We've gone out three times and it's been fun every time.
Anyways, my experience so far has been that I'm not concerned about my own abilities (i know what they are) , what makes me timid is to drive amongst traffic because I can't predict what every other mouth breathing idiot driver is going to do. I would feel perfectly safe riding without a helmet but I do because of the unpredictably of those around me.
Mind you, this is on a Harley 883, not a power house by any means. I couldn't trust myself on a sport bike.

Fact: More than half of all motorcycle fatalities do not involve any other vehicles other than the motorcyclist.

Not sure why you would feel perfectly safe riding without a helmet knowing that fact but then you're a new rider.

Lmao. Didn't you start riding a year or so ago? I started riding dirt bikes when I was a kid and rode bikes up until I was 30. So yeah I'm afraid. 🙄 I love it when noobs or midlife crisis mid 40's guys that get their first bike and now they know more about bikes than those of us who grew up on them.

Why do you even bother posting in motorcycle threads? You consistantly give some of the worst advice and you just hate on motorcycles and riders constantly. :colbert:

Although, this is kind of a motorcycle hate thread anyway...

Your head hits the concrete at 20mph after a minor low\high side, you are going to want a helmet.

t-boned at intersection with helmet= broken bones + months of rehab
t-boned at intersection without helmet = Depends how well your head takes to slamming down on to concrete. Could mean death or a vegetative state

There was a thread on one of the motorcycle forums a number of years back, this guy was moving his bike around in his garage, his foot slipped and he and the bike toppled over, he whacked his head on the concrete. Major concussion, he felt dizzy so his GF took him to the emergency room where they took him in to surgery to relieve swelling of his brain. If he hadn't gone to emergency he would have died for sure... from a tip over in his garage. No, he wasn't wearing a helmet.

This is the type of impact that a helmet protects against, the impact from falling down and hitting the tarmac. Not hitting your head against anything at any sort of speed, that impact just kills you, helmet or not.

In 2010, so ... if I carry the one....take the log...I get three years. Clearly then it doesn't take a rocket scientist, or a life long rider to know that riding can be a fun enjoyable thing if you wear the right gear and don't act like a dipshit. You know you can't control what other drivers/riders do. That is something you need to accept when you hop on the saddle. If you can accept that risk; whether it be because you apparently only know riders who are now vegatables, or simply because you chose to ignore the hundreds and thousands of other riders who are totally safe while riding, is up to you.

I know a few people who have died on bikes. It was their fault. I also know more riders who have never been down, or if have, survived and are currently living unaltered states of life from their incident.

And that covers pretty much any lowside at any speed and many other multi-vehicle accidents as well.
