well, i have been married for almost 15 years

my average salary in that time has been, uh, um, lets say 40k
she gets half (according to community property laws)

so 15 x 40 / 2 = 300k

looks like i am up to $300,000 so far !

my ex was low maintenance. total i spent over 2 years on dates was probably less than $750. towards the end we were taking turns paying as well. for gifts, i probably spent less than $200, on two birthdays, an anniversary, and 2 christmas'. was building up to a gift of gold or silver, but she broke up with me before. her loss

For my SO, I built her a P4 machine So whatever that cost. I think ~$600.

Without being married first, wife & I had been dating for a year & I told her if she put 10% of her take home into a retirement account, I'd put her on my auto insurance & pay for it.

Cost me ~$500, will amount to thousands by the time she retires, she was in her 20's when she started participating in the retirement program.
