My gfs father had done something similar and ended up having to take out another mortgage so that he could get the tax credits when he lost his job two years ago....but then again he lives in a very expensive house so I guess if yours is a little less then the taxes and such are not that bad, and it depends on location.

congrats on being so financially sound though...I guess you are the antithis of me, you like to save for later, whereas I like to live now.

No no no...don't own outright. Sorry for the misconception. I've got a mortgage on it.

I use the term "home owner" in the sense that I'm not renting an apartment/condo.

If I didn't have a mortgage out, it'd be tough to take home office deductions against the mortgage, and claim the interest against my taxes.

well I have 3 MD players costing £330, £250 and £220. Didn't need the 2nd or 3rd one but I wanted them and saved and bought them. They are all smaller then each other and have a better remote and battery life.

I didn't need my Oakley Why 3 costing £370 ~ $550 with prescripted Oakley lenses in but they look dam nice.

Didn't need a phone that was $300 but I wanted one.

Glad I bought all of the stuff that I have. Makes life fun and just 'nice' to have. I got these things as I'm good with my money and savings

I don't know what your salary is like, but any ideas on what you paid for your house and what kind of a mortgage they gave you?

we are looking to spend about 250-350 if we get that much.

I did a 95% financing on a $120,000 townhouse @ 7.25% interest. Our mortgage payments come out to about $920 a month after PMI.

Property taxes will work out to be about $130 a month.

Re-read the first post and have to second my own Oakley's purchase. I bought a nice pair of black/black e-wires back in 1999 with a lifetime warranty from my dealer (snowboard shop) back home, and when I set a car battery on top of them accidentally at an Auto Zone counter last year (D'OH!!), I sent them in for repair (and wore a set of fake silver Eye Jackets in the meantime ). Quite a bit to my surprise (and proving the rumors true!!), they sent me a new pair! Not even the original style, but the nice new e-wire 2.0s. Same black/black color. I love 'em. My Dad said "well, I guess I can understand why you spent $130 on a pair of sunglasses now.."

Darn tootin'. Oakley rocks.

Bingo. That's what I want to do.. townhouses rock until you can get an actual house. I plan on living in one after I graduate, and probably for at least 5 years after that.

I needed a basic hot plate/stirrer for work. I could have gone and bought the cheapest corning hotplate/stirrer like everyone else had (~$250) but I wanted the www.ika.de RCT stirrer with heater for $497. It is great for low speeds and is sealed so stuff can't spill in it (german electronics engineering and not simple potentiostats allow it to be sealed). I really should learn not to spend work money as if it were my own.
