I agree with many moments said, so I'm gonna skip mentioning repeats for the most part.

Seventh Guest. When you're in the basement maze and you hit a dead end and the creepy voice says something like "feeling lonely?" First time I heard that my skin crawled.

The end of FF9. Not a good surprise, just a WTF surprise when some random monster that you've never met and has never even been mentioned appears to tell you he's the actual final bad guy. It's what turned me off from Final Fantasy games, I haven't played a new one since.

Chrono Trigger. When Crono is vaporized by Lavos in the undersea base in 11000 BC.

Deadspace. Finding out Isaac is having one giant hallucination.

The original NES Top Gun game. Landing the damn jet for the first time. It's shocking as hell since you just assume you'll never do it after crashing 1500 times.

Can't say there have been any surprising/shocking moments that I can recall. :/
FEAR demo. You climb backwards down a ladder and then turn around to see Paxton Fettel in your face. Since it was a demo, wasn't really expecting that.

Alyx's dad dying was a pretty big one as well.

Getting bored with Assassin's Creed after an hour. Did NOT see that coming.

That fear demo moment I remember so well... I was playing it and I was like, "Hmm.. Gotta get this guy!" Then he just appears and I was like, "OMFG!!! WTF IS THIS SHIT!?!!?" That's the first time I had that kind of shit happen in a video game to me before.

I am a little surprised nobody has mentioned Planescape Torment.

Rather than one moment in that game being shocking the entire plot line was shocking, as was the way the story made you have empathy for creatures that would normally just be fodder for you sword in most games.

If any of you have not played it - pick it up from bargain bin or whatever. It is a classic that should not be missed. Heck, suddenly have an urge to play it again 🙂

When the hag Raven(I think that was her name) told you were were made immortal and were trying to find a way to end your own mortality was a bit of a shocker. As was the final scene, grabbing your mace and walking into a conflict of demons battling knowing it would give you what you seek - your own mortal death. That struck me emotionally and I still have not forgotten it - best ending ever.

Er...I don't think you understood what happened there.
That's the blood war. You die the second your mortality is destroyed or when you merge. You get sent to Hell for your crimes, where you fight in the blood wars.

I guess I forgot more than I realize it has been a long time. I am so tempted to replay this classic. 🙂

Great Game! Haven't played it in years, but I *still* laugh at the bit where you're running around talking to NPC's and run into that old lady near the Wailing Wall, and she b*tches you out "...Damned Adventurers and their stupid questions!!... 'Pardon me, Have you seen the Necklace Of Blow Fireballs Out Your A$$...'

heh - Had to go look it up...

""I'll bet ye've got all *sorts* o' barmy questions!" She mimics your heroic stance: "Greetin's, I have some questions... can ye tell me about this place? Who's the Lady o' Pain? I'm lookin' fer the Magic Girdle o' Swank Iron, have ye seen it? Do ye know where a portal ta the 2,817th Plane o' the Abyss might be? Do ye know where the Holy Flamin' Frost-Brand Gronk-Slayin' Vorpal Hammer o' Woundin' an' Returnin' an' Shootin'-Lightnin'-Out-Yer-Bum is?" She spits. "Dung, all o' it! Only gets ye in the Dead-Book! I ought ta kick ye in the shins fer even pesterin' a poor ol' woman about it all! Now go away an' leaves me in peace!

This actually made me go re-install Planescape Torment. Had to spend a little time installing mods, widescreen support and change the registry so I do not have to do any cd swapping but worth it!! Was surprised I even had the game still. Was in the bottom of my 'junk' desk drawer.

The resolution actually looks good in widescreen, tons of fixes in the mods. There is plenty of graphical wonkyness but nothing I cant deal with. The interface/combat is as clunky as I remember but its bearable so far. And wow, its been so long its almost like playing it for the first time. The Dialogue / story is awesome ( and more times than not - hilarious ! ).

I love how exploring conversation options is actually useful ( not to mention amusing ). I went up to some hooker and basically told her she wasnt even good enough to sell herself and she then tore me a new you know what. Morte - the floating skull liked her insults so much he added it to buff his "Litany of curses" ability ( which is basically a taunt ).

Found one possible bug though in a bar this NPC who keeps asking me to come talk to him, I click the dialogue button but I cannot innitiate conversation. Oh well, it is 10+ years old!

As I play this I am thinking - this would make one hell of a CGI movie if done right

12,000 BC.

I'm still not sure if it was the clone from Bekkler that was vaporized originally or not.

I had a really funny WTF? moment in Diablo II, the Mad Cow Level. HILARIOUS! Especially when they die.... MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! moo moo moo, moo moo, moo moo moo moo moo mooo mo MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO moo moo moo moo

Fallout 1 -
When the Overseer kicked you out after you saved the Vault and then you shoot him to death.
Thief 1 -
After you return The Eye to Constantine (reveled as Trickster,) Viktoria ripped your eye out to power The Eye and left you to die.
StarCraft -
Karrigan got captured by the Zerg and turned into the Queen of Blades.
WarCraft 3 -
Arthas binded his soul to the Frostmourne, turned into DeathKnight and then went back home to kill his father, the King.
Jade Empire -
You helped bring down the Emperor (Sun Hai) and Master Li took the Jade Heart and then killed you.

she CAN be brought back to life in the game. google it.

no she can't. over the what 10+ years there have been many stories and claims that people have brought her back but NOT ONE has been validated. you would think if there was a real way to do it there would be pictures or movies of it.

Face facts. while people want her to be resurrected ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

2 memorable moments in Doom III, 1 near the beginning when the imp jumps out from underneath the stairs was frightening...much more frightening than first meeting the imp.

Second was definitely the pinky demon. Holy shit, that was a trip. I was playing the game with my friend looking over my shoulder and when the pinky started knocking the room in, we both started screaming.

Too bad the rest of the game was shit.

FEAR scared me a few times, whenever that god damn girl shows up. Fuck creepy kids.

I can't think of any good storyline twists for the life of me right now, but I know I've experienced many. Now that I think about it, I've been more pleased with the video game industry's originality more so than the movie industry in the last decade.

I thought the walking through the airport killing civilians level in Modern Warfare 2 was surprising, wasn't expecting that at all...

Just want to comment about Aerith.
She died. Can't resurrect. Get over it.
Kitase or Nojima, forget which, is on record during an interview explaining why. Basically RPG's up until then were typical happy fantasies. Nobody dies until the very end, if at all, and death was always a "final sacrifice" noble sort of thing. He wanted to leave a lasting impression on the player from early in the game so the decision was made to kill one of the main characters. It was purposefully done to be as cruel as possible. Aerith wasn't the first choice, but she worked out well.

I think it was Quake. Either first or second level. First of all, this game was dark, much darker than any other game before, to the point where you kinda leaned towards the monitor to see if you could make certain things out.

I remember standing on something on the floor, and then 2 blocks floating into square crevices in the wall. The door opens up. Nothing but black, so you lean forward to see if you see anything. Then out of nowhere, a fricken demon dog jumps 50 feet and mauls your face.

I remember this, because it was the only time I swore in front of my grandma, who was ironing clothes at the time.

Seeing thousands of Sathanas juggernauts swarming the star at the end of Freespace 2 was so epic... It took you literally most of the long SP campaign to destroy one of them... It was such a hard fight, everybody was cheering when the SJ Sathanas finally fell... And then this. Nobody was prepared 🙂

The real shock with this has to be once you destroy the SJ Sathanas and breathe a sigh of relief and joy....

Then realise there's another one to take out.... and a whole fleet of them to follow after that...

Also, recent shock.... finding out who the traitor is in Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising on a pure playthrough... could have been one of several people (yes, even on pure)

Yeah, just finished this yesterday on Primarch difficulty (the hardest IIRC)

That was a good shock, I suspected that person, then it changed, then it changed again, then BAM F YOU

lol

It was good times, great story and fun gameplay

FarCry - the map where you're mostly on a boat going down a river.. I had been playing that game mostly slowly picking off enemies.. I just felt like doing this one Rambo-style.. and it was awesome. Boom.. a boat explodes and then a helicopter splashes down in front of me while I'm hauling ass getting shot at..

Counterstrike Source - the first time I saw a grenade explode near a barrel.. and the barrel actually reacted with speed..

MDK - ya.. old.. but i just remember that entire game being an exhilerating experience

Max Payne - when you're going up an elevator with a helicopter shooting it up
