Chevy Chase is NOT funny, the "hot" chick is the girl from TRON, I wanted to slap the main kid around, Bill Murray was disappointing. Meh. When the best parts of a movie are Rodney Dangerfield and a "Candy Bar" in the pool joke, you know you've got a problem.
Yup. You had to be there. The 80s for adults were all about getting high, avoiding responsibility, while desperately clinging to a selfish what's in it for me attitude.

Yeah. Good times.

My pick - Titanic. I have tried and tried but cannot get past the first 20 minutes of the movie.

Overrated movies: the aforementioned Titanic, Jurassic Park 2 (well, overhyped anyway)

Umm have you checked IMDB recently? Donnie Darko got 8.3 . I would call that very high rated for a movie, considering its #93 of all movies on IMDB, and also overrated. I use IMDB alot to judge movies, as I'm sure alot of people on here do. If you wanna talk bout the whole 'movies i didnt like' thread, how bout the guy who posted Look Who's Talking? I dont know who overrated it.

Old School - that movie had hardly any funny parts aside from the parts we saw 1000 times on the preview.

Donnie Darko - this movie just flat out sucked, no clue on the hype

Bubba HoTep - again, this movie was just ridiculous and I dont see how that movie was even funded.

ill post more if i can think of them.

EDIT1:
Signs - if it was advertised as a religious movie instead of a thriller, maybe it wouldnt have been.

Unbreakable - this movie just speaks for itself ...

these are just BAD movies...we are talking about 'overrated' movies, movies which were hyped a lot but basically sucked :)

Movies that are overrated are not necesarrily overhyped. I saw no hype in Donnie Darko. Infact, I didnt even know it was out for a few years after it was released. Overrated on the otherhand means when people rate a movie higher than it should be, not hype it more than it should be. With that in mind, yes, all of these movies i mentioned were overrated. By IMDB, movie critics, and people in general.

Just remember ... overhyped != overrated. :)

Titanic for sure, the claim was that it being done by James Cameron and the sinking ship meant there was something there for everyone. Not for me, just boring crap.

But the worst is Blair Witch Project, so much hype, so much critical acclaim, so much boring arguing, and so little horror. I was feeling ready for a nap by the time the decent 3 minutes came up.

As a side note I find it funny how many of these movies also showed on the underrated list. :D

Jesus Christ, why has no one mentioned the pure crap-fest that was 'Armageddon" ???

And I thought this thread was about "over-rated" movies? You know, movies that all the big-time critics love and that end up winning a bajillion Oscars, but you'd be hard pressed to find a single person who actually enjoyed watching it. You can't throw up titles like Donnie Darko and Bubba HoTep for this.

Armageddon
Titantic
The English Patient
Jerry Maguire

Pulp Fiction - boring story
Kill Bill - absurd videography
As Good As It Gets - no plot
Blair Witch Project - no story, vomit-fest
Super Troopers - stupid plot
Entire Godfather series - boring plot

I don't remember Armageddon getting a whole lot of critical acclaim.

I also think that in the context of this thread, "overrated" refers to movies that everyone else seems to love but you don't.

Also, some of you people have no taste in movies ;)

Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Donnie Darko, Requiem for a Dream, Saving Private Ryan, 12 Monkeys? Add in Aliens, Trainspotting, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and you have something very similiar to my favorite movie list. :p

True, Armageddon was actually just a pet-peeve one mine, I suppose. It actually fits into you definition better. Everyone enjoyed this movie and it was quite popular, but to me, it was just so utterly rediculous. I'm not usually overly-critical on impossible things happening in a movie, but not when the entire premise of the movie is based on it! Quickly build some new spacecrafts, outfit it with a redneck crew of deck-hands, slingshot around the moon to land on an incoming asteroid, drill to some arbitrary depth ("We're at 83 1/2 feet! We can't stop, that last 6 inches is so very important!"), detonate a nuclear bomb in the hole, escape and return to earth, planet is saved, everyone's a hero, the end! W. T. F. !!!!!!!!!!!! ;) I think if 'The Core' had an Aerosmith song on it's soundtrack, it might have been just as popular!

Yeah, sorry about that. I guess I was thinking of over-hyped, perhaps.

It's cool. :D

Just glad this thread hasn't devolved into a flamefest over movie preferences yet. ;)

Any Adam Sandler or Will Farrell movie.

I suspect these two made a deal with the Devil. Their fame is unwarranted given the immense talent of unknown actors out there.

I hated Armageddon, but I actually enjoyed the core. I guess because it really didn't take itself too seriously.
