Jesus Christ, why has no one mentioned the pure crap-fest that was 'Armageddon" ???
And I thought this thread was about "over-rated" movies? You know, movies that all the big-time critics love and that end up winning a bajillion Oscars, but you'd be hard pressed to find a single person who actually enjoyed watching it. You can't throw up titles like Donnie Darko and Bubba HoTep for this.
Armageddon
Titantic
The English Patient
Jerry Maguire
I don't remember Armageddon getting a whole lot of critical acclaim.
I also think that in the context of this thread, "overrated" refers to movies that everyone else seems to love but you don't.
True, Armageddon was actually just a pet-peeve one mine, I suppose. It actually fits into you definition better. Everyone enjoyed this movie and it was quite popular, but to me, it was just so utterly rediculous. I'm not usually overly-critical on impossible things happening in a movie, but not when the entire premise of the movie is based on it! Quickly build some new spacecrafts, outfit it with a redneck crew of deck-hands, slingshot around the moon to land on an incoming asteroid, drill to some arbitrary depth ("We're at 83 1/2 feet! We can't stop, that last 6 inches is so very important!"), detonate a nuclear bomb in the hole, escape and return to earth, planet is saved, everyone's a hero, the end! W. T. F. !!!!!!!!!!!!

I think if 'The Core' had an Aerosmith song on it's soundtrack, it might have been just as popular!
